Knock Offs

Well All I can say is I have had one of my knockoffs come off while crusing at 70 mph, not an experence I hope to do again (note $1200 damage and the plastic was OK). With that said, the wheels were on correctly and pins installed. Note there are 2 types of pins that exist straight and tapered...... TAPERED SUCK!!!!!!. I used pins that are .187 diameter. After beating the hell out of the spinners installing the pins then I smack the spinner (the tighten direction) to preload the pin. This prevents the pins from jumping ship should the cap come off. So now after the weekly car wash I remove the caps and inspect the pins.

PS I love my knock offs and such a deal, a classic car that that you get to beat with a lead hamer................. Only in America!:beer

Fellas, somewhat o/t but I highly reccomend Dennis Portka's k/o tool. Great unit - works as designed. Worth the price, IMO.

My tire fell off!

i bought used knock off's and i ordered new lug nuts and 4 safety pins...but it still looks a little scary using the original style knock off's ...the adapters look fine the way the get bolted...but the spinner to the adapter worries me a little...do these safety pins really do the job?? is there another way i can make these wheels more secure?? maybe some people in here have some better ideas that they have done to there wheels...thanks again
My tire did go flying off.
I was going only about 20 MPH. The tire ended up going down the street hitting a side of a house (no damage to house). On my car it took out a 3 inch by 14 inch area around the passenger side front. If they had the bolt on knockoffs like they sell now, thats the ones I'd buy.
These normal knockoffs are dangerious. The reason mine fell off is because the guy who put on my BF Goodrich TA's didn't smack the crap out of the knock off. Had they smacked it harder and then put in the safety pin, I wouldn't had my wheel fall off... :cry

I have Western Wheel knockoffs on my 64 coupe and have never had a problem. No pins, just good ol attention to preflighting the car. No one puts them on or takes them off but me so I know their condition at all times. A little antisieze and a safety wire like John Z recommends and I feel safe at all times, but don't be surprised if some day you pass a rest stop and there is this old geezer beating the SH** out of a spinner. Gets lots of funny looks but keeps them on the car.

And to Ronald who mentioned putting silicon on chrome rings to keep them from being loose...I use some small pieces of the rubber window insulation tape, 1/2" stuff...Just put a few of those inside and it snugs the ring up...

Great idea Jack. Of course when I used silicone, I let it dry first. Should have mentioned that. :duh Hope no one went out and put the ring on with the fresh silicon :gap ;LOL
