My 94 6speed has been pinging since I got it, in higher gears at low to mid RPMs under acceleration or load. I've tried higher octane fuel, and additives to clean out the injectors to no avail. My next resort, at the recommendation of a friend, is to replace the knock sensor, the problem is I'm not sure where it is located or what preparation there is before removing it. Any help is appreciated (as usual!)

You have 2 knock sensors. One on each side of the engine. Both shud be covered by a shield. I think they are right above the pan mating surface.

If you have to change them it will require draining the engine of coolant, unless your real fast.

Have you tried to pull any codes as yet. It would be a good idea to see if any DTC"S are stored before replacing any parts.
There is also knock sensor module in the ecm. Not positive about this, but I think it is the same as my 95. You may want to check the wiring to the sensors also.

Try this website for info re: pulling codes . You shud have the 16 pin DLC in your 94.

Knock sensors

jasbogart,
The knock sensors on most chevys are screwed into the block in lieu of the lower block drain plugs (where RABBIT described). In fact, removing them is the only way to completely drain the block. Might as well have a big bucket handy and do a coolant change.
I had a beater small block pick-up with a huge knock. Discovered the wire was off of the knock sensor (cheap fix:cool ).
