It's funny how things work out. I was just thinking about buying a long style L-88 hood that would eliminate the need for a wiper door. Then I found out that a local auto shop had one that had been sitting around for years.

I checked it out this morning. Despite being dirty and peeling red paint, it's in good shape -- the bolt holes are good; and no cracks throughout. So I decided to get it.

So here are my questions... there's a round hole on the underside (see photos). Would someone please confirm if this is the complete air box? If not, is there a kit for the air box, and how does it attach?

Any help is much appreciated.

I'm having trouble seeing your hood in those photos, so here's some photos to help you......

AirBox

Hmmm... I replaced the photos. Would you look at these?

I checked out the link. Very nice. Not sure if that is an additional piece for the airbox.

Ralph, that functional hood should really work out for you. I like it. Good Luck!

Jeff, is this a functional hood? I really can't tell. It's all hollow under the scoop, but the back has been bonded off. Weird. Shouldn't that be open?

I put a fiberglass L88 hood on my high school car ('71 Camaro), and the back of that scoop was open.

Perhaps I'll have to do some mods...?

Ralph,

Is there a passageway from the open circle (where the foam filter goes) towards the rear, perhaps exiting where that 6" wide opening is in your photos?

In my case, because it's a '67 and the over-the-Chevy-parts-counter piece is desgned for the front scoop hole, the air does not enter at the optimal location........the rear......like it does on the '68-'69.

Yes, there is a passageway toward the rear. However, there is not an opening, but it's all hollow!

I'm thinking I may need to cut away some material from the back end of the scoop and on the underside of the back (cowl) area -- as shown in the attached photo. Then the air could enter from over the (former) wiper door area, and through the back of the scoop.

Do you think this would work?

Ralph,

It could probably be made to work, but seeing it up close would make it easier to confirm.

I'd recommend waiting for other opinions. Someone may recognize the exact brand of hood.

When (and if) you get around to cutting, careful work with a Dremel should do the trick.

Good luck.

I just bought an aftermarket L88 hood for my 73, and it is closed off at the rear as well. I thiught that was strange. I haven't done anything with it yet.

Most of the L88 hoods I have seen advertised are non functional. Does anyone know who might sell one that is functinoal?

Modified

I went ahead and modified the hood. I used a Dremel, and carefully cut-out the area from the back and underside. It worked out well - see attached photos.

Did you notice a difference from the air flow once you opened it up?

I haven't installed it. In fact, I probably will not use it after all. I think this hood is for 73-77 Vettes, and it doesn't fit quite right - it curves too much at the ends where the hood corners meet the fenders.
