L82

By the VIN#, the 5th digit would be an "X" instead of an "L"

Thanks.. what would the 5TH digit " L " Represent?

:v and on the mid 70's C-3's the L-82 engines were identifiable by the finned aluminum valve covers in contrast to the base engines with the painted valve covers. I'm not sure however if that practice continued into the 80's/

For the 1980 Vette the fifth digit in the VIN would be either 8 for L48, 6 for L82, or H for LG4(Cal. req.305). No X or L in 80 VIN.

I agree.
But this will only tell you what was in the car when it left the factory, not what is in there now. Need to check the stamp pad on the engine (machined surface on the block in front of the passanger side head). Should be two numbers stamped there. One will end with the last 5 or 6 numbers of the cars VIN. The other will end with three letters. These would be ZAK for the L48/auto, ZAM for the L48/manual, ZBC for the L82/auto, ZBD for the L82/manual, ZCA for the 305/auto (the 305 never came with a manual).
