I've been doing some research regarding setting up an L88 hood on my 81 coupe with gm crate hp 330 engine. I'm going to need a frest air chamber and L88 air cleaner. Here's my question, is the L88 air cleaner going to fit my edelbrock performer carb? If not what carb will I need to match the air cleaner?

My L-88 base fits both my Holley and the Q-jet, sorry I don't have an Edelbrock to check too.

I got my L-88 hood from J.C. Whitney with the air box already installed. The rest of the pieces came from Paragon. Have you seen this site? http://www.corvetteforum.net/c3/mdsmith/l88.htm
It was a great help to me in getting the right parts.

1979toy...
Was there any reason you purchased your hood and parts from JC whitney and paragon instead of getting everything from Ecklers? How much hp gains did you get after setting up the air induction? were there any other benefits? Did you need a richer air/fuel ratio due to the air induction?

Thanks for your post

If I bought the hood from Eckler's I would have had to buy the air box seperatly and bond it on myself. The J.C. Whitney hood comes with the air box bonded on if you order the model with it. The fact that the price was hundreds of dollars cheaper may have figured in to the mix too.

I installed a Holley at about the time that I installed the hood so I can't help much with the tuning as I didn't have my carb tuned before I installed the hood.

The engine REALLY like the cooler air but I don't have any dyno numbers or race track proof.

There is plenty of cool factor in the hood. My hood is much lighter than stock. I can not see the right front light when it's up but otherwise it doesn't bother my vision.

1979toy...are you using a k&N filter with your set-up? do you notice a difference in performance in winter months and summer?

I'm using the stock foam L-88 filter but others have adapted a K&N filter by using a foam spacer to insure a leak free fit.

Yes, my car LOVES cold weather.

An Edelbrock will not work with the GM drop base. The Edelbrock high fuel inlet and the choke are both obstructions.

1979toy...... I few quick questions about the hood from J.C. Whitney. 1. Do you know who the manufacturer is? 2.How much of the wiper area is covered, and does the hood edge match up well with the fender tipsin that area? 3. How is the overall quality of the hood?

Thanks

2 year old info (legendary made whitney's hoods)

BB NJ Ken:
This information is TWO (2) years old ... do not know if it is valid today. Two years ago I checked into who made Whitney's L-88 hoods. Two years ago, Whitney told me Legendary Cars made their L-88 hood. Two years ago, I contacted Legendary Cars, Inc at 2065 Bunnell RD, Warrington PA 18976 (phone: 215-491-1717). I spoke with Larry at Legendary. Larry confirmed he supplied Whitney w/ several different styles of vette hoods ... not solely L-88. He told me some of Whitney's fitment info was incorrect at that time. He did tell me all latches, hinges & supports mount right up as stock. And that he sold the hoods direct too ... but the price was about the same at Whitney. BTW, Legendary's pn's were:
68-72 L-88 w/o air box, w/o wiper= CHA061
68-72 L-88 with air box, w/o wiper= CHA062
68-72 L-88 w/o air box, with wiper= SHA061
68-72 L-88 with air box, with wiper= SHA062

No, I did not order a hood ... can't tell you a thing about fit/finish.
JACK:gap

My hood was made by Legendary as mentioned above. Since I put my hood on a '79 without the wiper doors I can not comment on the fit at the wiper door area. Overall the fit was good with about 1/8th inch more gap side to side than I had with the stock hood. The front to rear gap was the same. All of my hardware bolted up to the new hood without any problems. The quality of the top of the hood was great but the underside could have used a bit more work.

Ram injector or Cawl induction?

The JC Whitney web site refers to 427 corvette style fiberglass hood with ram injector scoop with air box. Is ram-injection another way of saying cawl induction? How about the term "air box", is that the same as fresh air chamber as referred to in Eckler's catalog?

In my original post to start this thread I asked the question: "will my edelbrock 1406 carb work with an L88 air cleaner enabling me to use the L-88 hood setup for cawl induction. Does this mean I would have to change carbs to utilize the L88 setup?

Thanks!

1970 stingray...Thanks for your patience and answering my question, I've only had my vette for a couple of months without much prior mechanic experience. I've learned quite a lot in that short time and always enyoy learning more.

If you have enough underhood clearance, you can use a 1/2 inch air cleaner spacer to work with the Edelbrock. I didn't like that idea so I switched my Edelbrock to a Holley.
