L98 Intake manifold leaking

I pretty sure my intake manifold has a leak at the rear, the odd drip of oil and if it sits for a few days the coolant will leak at the back of the intake not sure exactly where.

Has anyone else had this problem, is it a huge job to reseal the intake (new gaskets) etc. Or is it worth having a shop do the work.

Any advice would be great.

The previous owner had the intake gasket replaced on my '90 L98 in May 2002 when it was at 61,000 mi......the shop charged
about $500 total for intake manifold gaskets, coolant, sealer, t-stat & gasket and engine oil change, labor was 6.4 hours.

Its my understanding that 5-6 hours is normal to replace the gasket, and this is quite common on L98's.

My question to anyone who might know is: which years of the L98 are more susceptible to this, and how often in the lifespan of the car would the intake gasket need reaplced?

Pretty much all L98 are susceptible. The black factory intake gasket is the culprit. I would highly recommend going back with felpro blues, and as an added safety measure I'd apply some RTV around the water passages.

I had to have my intake gasket replaced at 60,000 also, as did a friend of mine who has an 85. The mechanic at the local Chevy told me that he's worked on quite a few L98's over the years and at 60,000 it's pretty common to see this.
