Larger Auxiliary Fan

I am curious whether anyone has replaced the stock auxiliary electric fan with a larger fan. The prior owner(s) of my '89 replaced the stock temperature switch for the auxiliary fan to come on earlier, but these fans make a racket and are nowhere near as efficient as the main fan when it kicks in. I have looked at bunches of alternatives to re-jigger fans turning on/off, but haven't thought about possibly installing a larger auxiliary fan.

Thanks,

Bumped to the top. I haven't done it but maybe someone will see it now and has an answer for you. :CAC

any fan with more cfm will help cool the radiator all depends on available room . I do not think a change would be a bad idea by any means .more air across the fins means more cooling plain and simple Steve

The auxiliary fan should not be making a racket, if it is, something is wrong with it. When mine comes on, I can't even tell unless I look under the front of the car.

Chris' post also made me question if the cooling system was truly operating as designed, at peak efficiency.
I really don't like spending money on things that don't fix my problems.:w

Thanks, everyone. The cooling system works fine, but what I ended up doing is buying the "kit" in the Mid-America catalog that includes both a 200 degree temperature switch and harness that, in '89s, will automatically trigger both fans at a lower temperature than when the ECM would usually cut in the main fan. I had been looking at all sorts of solutions to running a more even temperature for months (you know, revised computer chips, etc.)---I don't like the wide swings, even if it is normal. The previous owner had already installed a lower temperature switch for the auxiliary fan, so I left that in and simply hooked up the new harness as instructed. This is a TERRIFIC little kit---other companies/catalogs sell something similar, but this came with great instructions for all C4s that are very easy to figure out (no wiring diagrams, but simple sketches based on year of car, and I saw in a recent "sale" email from MidAmerica that you can look at the instructions on line). It took me only about 20 minutes to put in, and it works great. Switch and harness are about $25, I believe. Maybe I should put this into a separate thread, as there are frequently posts about temperature switches, chips etc., and this is a really simple, effective and cheap solution that avoids having to deal with all the "miracle chips" and exotic solutions crowd. Yesterday, put the surfboard out the hatch and went down to enjoy some surf in Galveston from Hurricane Dennis---happy and cool '89 Ebay rat and owner.
