My wife and I were heading home after a drive. We were coming up on a spot where the police normally sit and shoot cars with lazer. I saw the brake lights of everyone in front of me tapping their brakes as they popped over the hill so I knew there was one there.

Anyhow Im running the limit but I saw him shoot me then he took his gun down and looked at it then shot me again and did the same thing.
He looked at me as I went by with puzzled look so much so that I took notice.

Im in the market for a bird dog and as I was reading tonight about lazer and jammers and all of that jaz. It said that they try to hit a flat spot or something reflective etc...I dont have a front plate and being a C5 my lights arent up convertable top was down etc etc.

Could it have been possible he couldnt get a reading on me? Just curious.
He definately had a strange look as I went by.

Hope you get some feedback from LE on this - I'd really lke to know!

Yes me too! I forgot that we may have some fellow corvette owner LE experience on this.

The strange look could also have been that he couldnt believe I WASNT speeding:L

You know those C5's look fast just doing the speed limit

I'm not a Leo but yes, there was a thread on here about a year ago about how hard the C5 is to get a laser speed reading on. The C5 doesnt have any real flat or reflective spot on the front end for the laser to bounce off of as long as you dont have a front plate.

As a side note: Its also been tested that driving with your lights on (for cars with out pop up headlights) reduces the range of a laser radar gun by ~75% as long as they are aiming at your headlights.

Neat! Thank you.

:L:L:LYeah,Me either but it's been awhile, just got the Z06 back on the road a couple years ago and was road testing on the twisties!! North side of 100 on a 50 mph curve!! The cop was a sport about it too, arrested me took me to the magistrate,I posted bond and he gave me a ride back to the car!!:thumb

:D

i visited the old grey bar motel myself on my last ticket:eek:hnoes it was a learning experience.

YIKES!!! I have no interest in visiting the lock-up. Unil last year I also had a LS2 GTO in my stable which I used as my daily driver. It didn't handle as well as the Vette, but it got off the line nicely and merged like magic. Anyway, it had little trouble getting seen by LE. In fact, that's why I have it no longer. It sounded and felt great going through all six gears and I loved driving it (especially on long trips - very comfortable!). Bottom line is it was made for speed and I frequently obliged. Then on a trip north, one of NY State's finest asked me to slow it down a bit and blessed me with rememberances to the tune of about $1500. That was enough for me. Realizing my own "limitations", I let the goat go to a new home. It's strange, but I don't feel the need to go so fast in my Vette. Probably because I always ride top down.

In my opinion, radar detectors are a waste of money. Most of the time, when it alerts the driver of radar/laser, it's too late. At that time all it's telling the driver is "You're had". When I was working, I had the offending vehicle already "locked in" on my radar. Laser technology was just beginning when I retired but I do not believe that the Corvette is "invisible" to a laser gun. "LADAR" is accurate enough to pick out a speeding vehicle in a bunch of vehicles traveling close together.

since you have the inside scoop, what is the best thing to say when you get pulled over? ;help

Mac would be a good person to put that question to. Not being in law enforcement myself, I've always subscribed to the idea that if you get pulled over, then and there is not the time to argue with the officer. Be courteous, answer questions as briefly as possible, provide the officer with what he asks for, and don't display any attitude. You'd be surprised how many times I've been left off with a warning doing that.

"Where do I sign, officer"?

This thread ranks right up there with the 'silver cars aren't seen by radar' methinks. ;shrug

Jim

Now, now, those "silver car" threads are usually started by Remo while he's on his winter meds. We need to cut poor Remo some slack- he's old, and he gets afflicted with his winter Corvette Separatation Anxiety pretty seriously.

My radar detector has saved me 100+ times. It goes off way before the police are in my vision. Usually, at least an 8th of a mile away from the radar post. I never travel without it. Of course a cop is going to say that they don't work.

There's no magic utterance to get out of a citation. It all depends on how fast you were going.

Of course, your attitude plays big part. If your attitude is :mad...that's not a good sign. Greeting the officer with :r is not a good thing either. :soapbox at an officer is not the recommended approach. :finger will definitely get you nowhere. Getting sick and :pukeisn't the answer either.

Well, I said they were a waste of money. There are going to be times when they will save you from being stopped but having one is no guarantee that it'll save you all the time. I've owned my Z06 since '03 and have never been stopped. The point is...don't give the police a reason to stop you.

I agree. Im not looking to use one just to speed. I just want a friendly reminder to check my speed before I get an unfriendly reminder:D

I am used to driving slow cars/trucks and it seems like I have to really watch myself in the vette. Just wanted a little time to adjust my foot before getting there....you know just in case.

Also we have some speed/redlight cams popping up here in a little town near me. I try to avid going there but sometimes my business makes me go there. I am looking at the Passport escort 9500IX which has the GPS feature also for the speed cams.

sooooo........ which radar detecter is worth the $$. not tryin to to be cheap but i dont need gps on mine. just wonderin
