Are there shims in the rear brakes on a 75 . The pads do not fit tight and move enough to make a clacking sound . The pads and caliber are new. any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

If it's your Parking Brake, IMMEDIATELY take it to someone who knows how to work on them (not me) and save yourself a lot of grief, a possible heart attack, and the eardrums or your wife, neighbors and dog (not sure if he is out from under the coffee table yet or not).

Are the calipers on the 75 the same as the 80? I'm assuming yes. ;shrug
You drop them in on each side of the rotor and put the pin through to hold 'em in place. How/where is it they are clanking around?

Welcome to the CAC.

The pads fit loose. When no pressure is applied, they are free to move within the mechanical limits of the caliper and retaining pin.

Question

Are you hearing the "clacking" sound when driving or when rotating the rotor by hand? :confused

When driving . It stops whenever the brakes are applied.
That sounds strange, no pun intended. How do you know it's the brake pads themselves?

OK, does the clanking seem to be in sync (apologies to Ford) w/ bumps in the road?

NO. With the tire off you can see the inside pad see sawing back and forth and hitting the inside ends of the caliber. Must be the wrong pads or maybe the caliber or rotor ????

What's the total gap between the end of the metal backing plate on the pad and the caliper? In other words, how much can the pad move back and forth?

Check the runout on the rotor. I had a similar problem and the rotor was warped.
