Hi guys,

My wife is desperately looking for a C3(year '68 to '76) It has to be a project car. She wants the one with the flat rear so she can put a luggage rack on it.

It has to be in Florida.

Ryan

Email me at : Fast1970Vette@webtv.net if you need some good checklists for buying a C3 . I can also recommend a good book which i bought too.

I live 45 miles north of chicago , so, ill keep an eye open for you . Seems to me i ran across a couple project vettes lately..but i cant remember where. Email me so we can keep in touch in case i find one suitable .

Ryan,

77 has the flat rear end as well.

Wow, I've never seen the t-tops strapped onto the luggage rack like that. Is that how it's supposed to be? Looks good, especially without a convenient sportback that the '78 has. ;) :D

They are an aftermarket strap that were significantly less than what the originals were going for on ebay. It works great. When we went on the run up to the Tail of the Dragon they were on the back like that and never a concern.

You put two brackets on the rack, the inserts on the tops go through four holes and the straps hold them snug in the hole just like they were on the car. They are not going anywhere.

Hmmm...that is a good idea. They look fine, too. They don't look like they block too much viewsight either. If they are sturdy, I think that would be the way to go with luggage racks + t-tops. :)

I'm jealous.

I like the extra room behind my seats, but I'd like to be able to take the tops off whenever and wherever I want, too!
Even if I didn't have speakers behind my seats so I could put my tops in back...I don't think they'd ever be as secure as Bob's setup on his '77.

What do you mean? I think it's pretty easy just to through them in the back. :confused

Much easier on the rack. You don't have to worry about jockying them in place with contact with the interior pieces.

Someone was telling me that they were made for the 79 - 82 C3's as well though I have never seen them and don't think they would be as secure. On my car the wind comes over the top of them, protected by the body of the car due to the drop down. I would think on the later cars the edge would be in the wind and I would always be concerned that the edge would get lifted and they would go on down the road.

I should have clarified. My speakers are like "truck box" speakers, portable, but very bulky and they take up a lot of room. I don't want to be without tunes on long drives.

Heidi--
Getting offtopic here, but have you ever considered a system more custom molded to you interior? I have some plans for a system in my '78 that would allow me to keep most of the room in the back. I will be placing a set of 6 1/2" compenents in the doors. In the rear, I will have one 8" sub on either side of the rear wall (where the 6x9's would have come from the factory if your car was so equipped). I am getting a custom box made for that area. Three amps will line the back wall, but only stick out about 4" or so. Best of all, it will all fit under the luggage shade. I am not saying you need to go to this extreme, but even a mild setup could save you decent space!

Last Ride,

Are you taking out the map pouch pockets on the doors and putting the speakers there? I'm also curious what sort of radio you're putting in the dash since I'm trying to decide to repair the factory 8-track or go with a Custom AutoSound unit with CD changer or something similar.

Thanks,
Culprit

I just like to listen to the purr of the engine. Or...more appropriate...the roar of the engine. :D

Culprit--
Yeah, I have a design that would basically cut the carpet section out of the door panel and replace it with a speaker housing (then replace the carpet with something similar). I am looking at either an Eclipse or Alpine headunit. Obviously, I am going to need to cut the dash. If that is something you don't want to do, then you might want to turn away now, lol. The back wall will be lined with three amps, two mono amps (one for each sub) and then a two-channel amp for the fronts. In my experience, full range speakers for the rear are not needed. You only sit in the front, and it is STEREO, so the front speakers that I am using would be enough for me. If you were talking about the factory 4x6 in the dash, then full range speakers for the rear become much more necessary because you won't get much even out of the best 4x6. I have no real experience with Custom AutoSound, but I can say with certain confidence that my setup will blow away what they offer. That's not a knock on them, this system will just be that good. In fact, it will probably be overkill. But since when have these cars been about frugal decisions?

I like the sound of my exhaust...

...but when I drive for more than an hour I want some tunes! When we're taking the twisties (with Kenny driving) I like the radio off. :D

Last Ride, please send me a pic of your finished set up. I currently have an Alpine deck with my front dash speakers hi-$ Alpine but like I said, the rear are removeable truck box speakers. I do want to remove them and put in something permanant utilizing the metal loops on top of the fender wells to attach to. I'd like a sub and two 8" speakers. I have a 60w Alpine amp for the front and would like a 200w amp to drive the rear. I also have an Alpine EQ. Considering a remote CD changer...stuff it in one of the boxes behind the seats.

However, safety and reliability come before cosmetics and tunes fall under that heading, so I have to wait for several projects to be completed and then funds for fun stuff.

Florida CAC member...

Can a FL CAC member get a Corvette Trader and send it to Ryan for him and his wife to peruse?
I'm sure if there were any they were interested in, CAC members in the area would go check them out...
Heidi

Heidi - thanks for bringing us back to the issue at hand. Sorry for the hijack Ryan.

Culprit

(LastRide - sounds like you have a good plan. I'm not looking for overkill, but adding some speakers in the doors might not be a bad idea - I'll have to give it some thought.)

Thanks Heidi and Culprit,

I've just E-mailed Dave(swavedave) so we are going to keep conact and as I told him we live outside the US on an Island called Curacao a few hundred miles off the coast of Venezuela(south America). But we are almost every year in Miami FL. doing some shoppings it takes us about four hours flying. But if you see or hear about a corvette somewhere near Florida please E-mail me at standox.distr@curinfo.an. It has to be a project car('68-"77) about $1.000-$3.000 or a bit higher depending on the state the car is in.

Thanks,

Ryan
P.s. I'm happy to tell you guys I've just finished today assembling my '78 frame after working on it for one year. Next step my L-48 engine will do some mayor mods trying to push 300+ HP

Found it

Hi guys,

I found a vette it's an all chrome bumper car just like my wife wanted. I don't kmow which year it is but I have an appointment to see it tomorrow. The car is for sale on my own Island where I'm living, so I don't have to fly over to Florida to do all the hassels of shipping etc,etc,..

I saw this car last year and he was asking too much for a car that the engine doesn't fire up($8.000).So I didn't want to pay that much and I put it out of my head. Today I desided to give him a call and gues what, he gave me a much better price $5.000!!!

So this is probably going to be my next project car after I finish my '78 at the end of this year.

I'll post some pictures of the new vette very soon!!

Special thanks to Dave for the "checklist buying a C3".

See ya,

Ryan
