Looking for opinions on World Castings Heads

No it is not only price. I was reading "How to build a small block chevy for the street" by Richardson and he said to check them out as a potential vendor for heads. I looked at their website and I what I saw. Big intake runners and valves used in their SR torquer and Sportsman II heads. I need some new heads, valve seals are going, so I am looking for replacements. Everyone talks about AFR, Trickflow etc for heads. If the quality is there and they are good heads then they deserve consideration. I am a counter culture kind of guy (I have a Crossfire and believe I can make it run with the best of 'em :cool - I have a dream! )

Check out Pro Topline heads as well... That's what I bought, based upon recommendations by Competition Products (which sells some Trick Flow stuff in addition to a number of other lines) and the guy who was doing the porting. He'd also said to look at DART Pro 1's, but the techies at CP said that the Pro Toplines flow better out of the box with less work needed for high numbers. Neither is quite in the league as AFR, but are close and for less than half the price (Pro Topline bare castings were $650 a pair, under a grand fully assembled with valves/seals/springs/etc). I don't have them installed yet, but hope to soon. They're available in a variety of styles, from 190 to 220 cc intake, 64 and 72 cc chamber, straight or angle plug. I bought 200/64/straight.

What cam are you using? Your stock one? That'll make a difference what springs you need. Competition Products also sells the World ones you're looking at, so you might want to call their techline and ask them for a comparison. www.competitionproducts.com. Prices, btw, are sometimes cheaper than in the catalog (the heads I got, for example).

rrubel - Thanks for the info. I will definately check them out. I have not picked a cam yet. I need to decide on the package. Pick the heads, pick the cam and then figure out what I am going to do with the xfire manifold. I have a friend of mine that builds custom rods in Cal and is quite knowledgeable and has a machine shop for manifold work. (I am headed there today to visit family) We are talking about a custom manifold to use with bored TBs. Something like X-Ram but with a twist and smog legal. :D

Heads

Iwould suggest the Edelbrock aluminum heads #6071,6073,6089 they are under $1000.00 a set and can make 500hp with the right parts to go with them. The other choice would be the bowtie fastburn aluminum gm#12464298 they are capable of 500hp as well. I have used all of them and for the money the edelbrock heads give you more bang for the buck. Camshaft is going to be hard to say without knowing what your driving style is. The zz3 cam will make about 400hp and be very driveable. The next step would be the Lt4 hot cam with 1.6 rockers. I am assuming you want to keep the computers in the loop. If you would like to know more drop me a line.

Edelbrock makes a head for specificaly 1987-91 Corvettes part number 6087 60cc chamber under $1200.00 a set uses either style rocker covers.

We've used them on IMCA modifieds for years. Excellent head for the money. Good flow characteristics & beefier than the later model cast GM heads in case you want to port, etc.

They are/were available in several versions, angle/straight plug,
Torquer, Sportsman which has better flow characteristics than the Torquer.

I've got world product heads on my big block. Since the car runs great, and I've never had a problem with them (haven't run them alot, always upgrading the car, suspension, interior, etc) I was considering another pair for my crossfire. Was hoping they had a 67-68cc aluminum pair with 2.02 intakes and 1.60 exhaust. You might check the crossfire site www.crossfire.homeip.net/ I think they did a comparison on some heads and have some good technical stuff for us crossfire guys.

Galen - Thanks for the input on the cams, I will go check them out. Yes I want to keep the computer in the loop. Right now I am in the planning stages. I am upgrading from the 6026 to the 7747 which I will be able to tune myself. Of course, this will happen when I get what ever I am going to do finished. I am thinking of starting with a crate shortblock and new heads etc. No sense in trying to beef up the L83 - it would probably cost me more that just buying the crate.
