Hi everyone, sold my '93 Automatic Coupe and am now looking for a C5, 1997 thru 1999 years. My question is automatic or 6 speed. What is the consences out there. There are alot more automatics out there than manuals so it's alittle difficult to make a decision. Naturally it won't be my primary vehicle and I live in suburbs of Ny. With my auto I felt when driving locally my automatic Vette would like upshift and downshift often so thus the idea of the manual. Manual seem to have more power? What's the opinions? Thanks

You are correct about the auto trans up and down shifting! My shift point is about 1,500 rpm and it does not take much city driving (going from 40 to 30 mph) to get it at that range.

When I started looking I was convinced that I wanted a 6 sp. Well, one weekend while visiting my daughter in KC, I test drove an automatic and really liked it, then they had a 6 sp sitting there too. So I jump in thinking this was going to blow it away. But I can tell you I got tired of shifting in a hurry in that type of traffic. That was it for me, I decided then and there that an auto was in my future.

Both my C5's are 6sp's,I wouldn't have anything else!!
My preferences are C3's(4 sp or Auto) C4's (Automatic) C5's (6sp)
C6's ;shrug I haven't drove a paddle shift automatic yet,but I really like "vett boys" 6 sp!! :L:L:L

:D

I've got one of each... "some times you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't". Life is full of tough choices, some are just easier to make than others!

I like a 6sp but mine is a daily driver. Many days are in traffic. Like Toms01 said, that can be bad. As for the auto shifting too soon, I solved that problem by just putting it in 2nd when I want a little more sporty feel. That lets the Rs get up into the fun range and you really don't need any gear other than that in an auto when driving city streets.

I bought an automatic as I'm over the manual thing. I get over not having a 6-speed everytime I am in a lot of traffic.

Of course this is very personal decision, I bought my first vette, new, in 1980, an automatic. Since then I have had a C4 (92) and my current C5 (04) both 6 speeds and I would not have anything else. I don't use mine as a daily driver, I enjoy the thrill of shifitng the car, in total control of the shift points.

It's a sports car. I don't even know why they offer them in automatic! LOL

I just bought my C5 two weeks ago. Love it and love the 6speed. Not to thrilled with the active handling feature cause I can't break the wheels loose when I want to but I'm sure that will come with experience! Or I'll burn out my clutch!

Good Call, I bought mine on June 23rd and I love it! You can turn off the active handling with the button on the console. There are three modes: on, off and competitive driving mode. If you do a search on the thread for competitive driving there is a bunch of information on the different settings and what they do.

You want to Burn them???:L

Hold the button down on the console till "Competitive Driving" is displayed in the "Drivers Information Center"(DIC)!!:D:D:D

P.S. Hang On,It can and will get away from you if your not careful!!!:L:L:L

Really? Funny how the manual doesn't mention that!!! :L

Ok, now I'm itching to try it out and I've got 50 minutes till I can run out of my office and into the parking lot!
