Go to a GM dealer with proof of ownership and the VIN number. They can cut a new key. Not sure if the value of the chip is listed though.

Park it in East LA. I'm sure one of the locals can into it and get it started. :D

good thought but the car is 250 miles north. went to the dealer got keys .the door key worked but not the ignition key.so what do i have to do now .what else has to be replaced besides the lock ?

Is the key unable to turn the ignition or does it turn but the car won't start?

If the ignition turns, the dealer most likely did not give you a key with the correct resister pellet.

key doesnt turn in the lock . tough part is the nearest chev dealer is 150 miles away . i guess since i have aaa premier towing thats good for 200. but i wonder what else has to be replaced if i have to buy a new ignition lock . one thing for sure is i will have 2 extra sets made once done . does anyone know what has to be replaced if the lock assembly has changed????dealer didnt really know which is a little scary

Great point! Those pellets have annoyed many a GM product owner- me included!

Jon- I think you may have a bigger problem than the resistor. Your ignition lock may have had something break or binding internally and that is preventing it from turning. I'm not sure if you need the dealership.

If you have another shop that is closer- perhaps you should take it there. This is really more of an ignition lock issue than something that needs a guy familiar with an LT5. FWIW- Anyone who has worked on a 4th gen 6 speed Fbodys should be able to resolve this (VATS).

Hope that helps!:thumb

When my pellet went south, the GM dealer cut me 2 keys before the 3rd one worked and they had my old key.
I would not replace the ignition, it is a long and torturous trek.
Get a local locksmith to cut the key, when it turns then go to GM and have them use that to cut you a key w/pellet.

The old pelletless key is exactly the same dimensions as the key w/pellet.
