Opinions and where/who can i buy them from for a 1974 L82. Decibels are NO OBJECT lol:)

Preferably id like to shatter my neighbors windows, send dogs howling, and scare little children....or go deaf trying. Thanks:)

Headers only. No pipes or mufflers!

How about chambered exhaust? I'm very happy with mine.

Okay,

Chambered Exhaust? Im not familiar with it, i dont think ive seen it before or if i have i wouldnt have recgonized it.

Eric (71Shark) and I both have them...

...Eric called me on his cell one day while he was out for a drive, and that call convinced me that I NEEDED chambered exhaust!

I purchased a used set from a CAC member (thanks smurfvette!) and had them installed and I LOVE THEM! It gives my vette the BB sound, without the cost of modification. Everyone who has listened to my vette since the exhaust change (dual to Y to cat to Y to dual w/ mufflers) has asked if we put in a cam, or highly modded the engine.
I feel I have lost some low end torque (which I can regain with tuning) but have gained hp in the upper end, definitely!
I feel this system can benefit a highly modded engine to allow for better breathing, and it also benefits an unmodded engine (GM 350 crate in mine) with a GREAT sound! I can't wait for summertime driving with the tops off, wind in my hair and the roar of the exhaust in my ears!
Husband Kenny took my 78 to town yesterday, and cut up some roads on the way home. He came into the driveway and garage pretty quickly and told me to shut the door...I asked if anyone was after him...and he sort of grinned sheepishly! He was very excited and animated after his drive.
I think I may have to hide the keys, now. ;)
I have 4 pictures of the chamberres system before it was shipped to me, and I can email you a few so you can see what it looks like. Please email me so I can send a return email to you with the pics. Be sure to state "vette" somewhere, because I delete unfamiliar addresses without opening them.

My system was a used MidAmerica chambered exhaust. Chambered exhaust are basically 2.5" to 3" pipes WITH NO MUFFLERS that run from the rams horn collectors to the tips at the back. There is a 3' to 4' section in the center that is crimped (the chambered section) that acts as the muffler. When the exhaust hits the chambered section, it disturbs the waves and causes is to roll out of there with a BB sound!
Chambered exhaust is not legal (in smog states?) for on road use. Check the catalog, it will state the legal uses.

I ran my 81 for a summer with no mufflers at all just the straight through true dual pipes. Between that and the PJ gear drive it was loud !!!, I`m surprised I got away with it without any attention from the local constabulary. The other thing it did was severly p**s of my neighbours. However the novelty soon wore off, you can only set off so many car and house alarms before it aint fun any more.

I rode in a car with sidepipes this summer, he had no inserts or mufflers in them. IMO it was too loud, deafening at times. The 4" side tubes are by far louder than any muffler out there, and take my word for it, it will get annoying to you even. If you go that route and get tired of having migranes and want to quiet them a little without sacrificing performance look in the Group Discount forum for my post. I'll give you the forum discount on spiral baffles.

Thank you all,

So where do i start looking for side pipes or chambered exhaust? Im familiar with the flowmaster series mufflers, and the series 40 sounds pretty nice, but honestly i like the pure aesthetics of the side pipe look. I know Ecklers sells some, but they look cheesy. Does anyone make a set that at least looks presentable? Any website links would be appreciated thanks!,

GS

Thanks for the quicktimes.

Yep..straight pipes are loud heh... Is the gear drive a marked improvement over the belt drive? If so who sells them?

Oh yes, i will NEVER get tired of setting off peoples car alarms, especially the snotty peoples i work with...Payback for 4 years of drudgery lol:).

Actually the chambered exhaust are indeed legal in many, if not most, places. The chambered section is in essense the muffler. I wasn't about to put an illegal system on my car, I like driving it too much. I was suprised to know that I was legal though, considering you could nearly roll a tennis ball through my exhaust.

To further Heidi's explanation, the chambered section is comprised of a 4" pipe into which a baffle tube is inserted then crimped into place. It is the baffles that make it a muffler.

There are two most common makers of chambered systems, Walker and Allens. Walker builds the Mid-America system and it is available in both stainless or aluminized. I paid $300 for my aluminized system.

Re: Thank you all,

You can get the headers & sidepipes direct from Jet Hot with ceramic coating inside and out for around $1100. Ask for Todd.

Thanks Eric,

Sphinx, please take note of what Eric has said about the chambered system, I believe I emailed you some misinformation with the pic I sent you.

There are differing opinions on the geardrive, I went with it because I have had some bad experiences with belts snapping and doing considerable damage to valves, heads & pistons in two previous cars I owned. Chains are imho not much better, they can also snap, although the most common problem is chain stretch and worn sprockets. Ford had a chain driven twin overhead cam engine in some cars here and if the chain wasn`t replaced almost to the mile recommended in the handbook they snapped, wrecking the engine in the process. I know two people this happend to. Most engines with chain driven camshafts have either spring loaded or hydraulic tensioners but this is not the case in your V8`s and if the chain and sprockets get worn it can jump a tooth. As an example when a friend of mine rebuilt his Pontiac motor after what was not to many miles, although it had seen some action at the dragstrip, the chain was so slack it could be lifted off the cam sprocket.

The geardrive gives very accurate timing and has been used by several auto and motorcycle manufactures over the years so it is not a unique idea and will last the life of the engine. It is said that they transmit any vibration straight through the Valve train but if the engine is properly balanced and a good damper is used this will be negligible and shouldn`t be a problem. Mine is a Pete Jackson "noisey" Edelbrock also sell them and you can get quiet sets as well.

side pipes are the loudest for sure...However I have 2.5 pipes with an H pipe and dynomax headers and flowmaster 40's and it sounds pretty wicked.....Of course my motor is FAR from stock..I have heard chambered pipes and they sound good however they are a bit restrictive....especially for a modified engine

Grinning Sphinx,

I'd be happy to email you some sound clips of my car with straight back exhaust and Cherry Bombs (glass packs). I think Scott81 used to have the sound clips on his site, but I don't think they are there anymore. You can also get a minor impression from my "top speed" run video clip.

Hooker super comps.

Are the ones you have on your car the same ones that you can buy from JET for 1100$ Scott, or did you buy yours direct from hooker? Im asking since thats the kind of look id like to go for, with the twisted pipes. Thanks,

GS
