Lowering Kit?

Hi, this is Chris Kennedy, again. Interestingly, I have decided on the car I want (an '89 or '90) and what I want to do with it----even to the point of getting some great AFS black ZR1 style wheels. Now, all I need to do is get the car. Anyhow, one thing I am considering is one of those "lowering" kits advertised by all the parts suppliers (e.g., COrvette Central). It consists of longer rear suspension bolts and front wedges. Has anyone tried this? I only want to lower the car just a bit (about 1"), as they sit a bit high. Does it work, and were there any problems?? That, and those Grandsport fender stripes and window decals (e.g., red line oil etc.) and my life will be complete.

Thanks,

/s/ Chris Kennedy

Welcome to the C4 world (once you purchase), a lot of members do not recommend the lowering kit. However if lowering your ride will satisfy you, go for it! At the end the purpose will be to make you happy :D . You can also buy coil overs. Here are my $0.02 for the day

Lowering a car can be a pain in the butt, literally. Think hard about it before you do it; the rear is easily changed back to stock, but the front is another story and much more work. ;)

Thanks---that's why I asked. The front end gives me the most concern, as I am not all that familiar yet with the set up, while the rear lowering bolts seem to employ the same basic principles as was the case with my old '81. In any event, this isn't a big deal for me. Most of the improvement in looks will (in my opinion) come from the AFS ZR1 style wheels (black--no center caps to be used, as it looks tougher). There will definately be lots of other things requiring more immediate attention, I am sure.

Yup....... Mine is lowered

After the wheels are on, look again and decide on lowering.

I have some ground clearance concerns after lowering, but can deal with them okay. You can simply get two #8 bolts of appropriate length from a good hardware source to lower the rear, which alone, might satisfy your 'look' needs. I would not recommend lower than 'straight across' half shafts.

You won't get more than about 3/4" lower in the front, which causes most of the scraping issues.

That's an excellent idea about just bringing down the back a bit, as the back is where the main problem is, to my eye.

Chris,

Remember to get it re-aligned after you make any height adjustments. I did the rear-only change. It does make a difference in the way the car looks.

Thanks---I'll remember to do that, as I had to do it with my '81 as well.
