Is there secret to getting the starter off an LT1 without removing the exhaust system? I can't get to the last bolt (long bolt) since the heat shield is in the way on the catalytic converter. If the exhaust needs to be taken down it will be a pain since the cross brace is also in the way. Can anyone provide some insite?

LT-1 Starter removal

I modified the shape of the heat shield with a medium sized crow-bar. Only had to reshape it a little (remains clear of the cat) by prying with the tip of the bar against the bolt head. Then used a long 3/8" drive extension and socket rather than 1/2" drive since the smaller drive has much smaller diameter. The bolt was very tight so had to use a 3/8" to 1/2" drive adapter at the back end of the long extension so a long 1/2" drive torque wrench could be attached. Once loose, the bolt came out easily. Put it back the same way. No rattle or other bad consequence of reshaping the cat heat shield.
