I am in the process of trying to decide whether to purchase a 1996 LT4 equipped car (the 1990 deal I was working on didn't go through). I seem to remember reading that, at least when the cars came out, there was some sort of rocker arm or similar problem with these engines, and they were subject to a recall. Obviously, I want to find out more about this, and how would I tell whether the car I am interested in was "fixed" if there was a recall. The car has about 44K miles on it. Thanks for any help people can provide.

you can find out from any Chevy dealer if you have the VIN number. The car should have been fixed, if it was a 'recall' car. Not all the LT4's were under the recall.

The LT4 is a great engine... awesome torque, and high end horsepower. You really can't go wrong.

Serial # checked with a dealer to see if rocker arm recall was done. That and the 1-4 skip shift is about the only drawback on LT-4, along with an extra 2k on the price. Most of the 'extra' hp is above 5k rpms if you lurk there often.

Even though the LT4 is approaching nine years of age, it has nice giddy up and go. Wind one out once and you’ll see what I mean! :bu

The skip shift is not a problen, just disconnect the plug and install the adapter from Ecklers, Mid America or who ever, about 20 bucks. The LT4 isa great motor, I like it better than my 98.

1-4 skip shift is bypassed by unplugging the wire hanging on the bottom of the tranny... takes 5 minutes.

The extra power is all through the power band. I have had L98, LT1, and LT4 cars... The LT4 is the best by far. Tons of torque to give you get up and go (that the LT1 lacks), and lots of high revving HP (that the L98 lacks). You can feel the power difference if you drive the car up the street at 'normal' speed or you go full throttle.

If you don't believe me, look at dyno charts of LT1 and LT4 cars next to each other. The torque 'curve' on the LT4 is practically flat.

Thanks, everyone, for all your quick replies. I will let you know how this all develops.

Yes the LT-4 is a great engine, and the CAGS eliminator is an easy fix. With Corsa and SLP intake I guess my '96 a4 is doing 325 HP now along with a few other little things. The LT-4 heads flow a little better, and the roller rockers and cam pitch in another 15 or 20 hp. The 1 year exclusive offering is cool too. They will run with early C5s all day. I drive a friends CE sometimes to compare. I really think I lucked out on a real good strong engine on my used C4. The LT-4s are generally thought to be under rated at 330.

The 3.45 rear end helps with the sotp dyno. The torque curve is fairly similar with the LT-4 a bit longer and stronger. I'm not slammin' them at all. They're fun to drive, and remain a bullit-proof factory hot-rod SBC in a 6 speed Vette. What's not to love my friends?

I have had my LT4 a couple of years now and no problems. It goes like stink and as was said earlier it's kinda cool having an engine that was a one year offering in an era when engine choices are limited. The ZF 6 speed that all LT4's are tagged to is really fun, slick and durable. The LT1 is a really great engine. The LT4 is like a hot LT1. If you like gobs of torque.......go LT4.

Chris, Good luck...the LT-4 pulls on torque till about 3.5 K rpm, then runs like a raped ape above that.I'm in your area, get in touch.....can not go wrong with the powertrain.

Chris,

Here's a link to the campaign details in the Knowledgebase. More details than you could possibly need but good info to have. For your sake I hope the car works out. I've only driven one LT4 but like others have said they are a blast to drive. It just pulled and pulled and then pulled some more:D.

If you find a LT-4 that has not had the update to the rocker arms, GM will still do it at no charge. Just had a friend who bought a grand sport with about 35k miles on it. Found out afterwards the recall had not been done. Called his local chevy dealer and they took care of it. This all took place in the last couple months.

Although I have done quite a few upgrades to mine, the only things that I have HAD to do were replace the waterpump at 66K miles, the A/C controller at 30k (?) and retighten the clutch fork bolt that had worked loose. The vette now has 90K and runs better than ever. Of course, even though I have added performance increasing items, it really has had an easy life. My advice is to find the best example out there and keep it WELL maintained.

LT4! whoo hoo... def. a nice car. I upgraded my LT1 with the LT4 heads intake and LT4 hot cam! and it was a huge difference.. when I put my car up for a while and then finally take it out again it reminds me how much power it has.. it brakes em loose 1-2 VERY hard.. even with a fresh set of nitto's

as for problems most have been addressed in this thread.. rocker arms which the dealer can take care of, the opti which is a problem design with all lt1/4's and the water pump design.. but other then that they are great! very reliable and make awesome power..

Go Chris Go!!! I've had mine for 2 years with just under 50K miles. Excellent car! Like to see another LT4 in area. I'm 50 miles south of Houston. Let me know if you're in the area.

Well, all of you were right in that the LT4 in the car I drove is a terrific engine. I also determined that the car had the engine fix. Unfortunately, the rest of the car left a bit to be desired condition-wise. One thing does really bother me: I love manual transmissions (I had a special Richmond Gear in my '81 for almost 100K miles), but I have to admit that I am having some problems with the 6 speeds in the C4s. This is about the third or fourth I've driven (I won't belabor the CAGS system, as that can easily be disconnected even though it wasn't in the car I drove--the GM person who came up with that should be shot). First, the shift gate is pretty sloppy and rubbery feeling, but this can be fixed with a new shifter. This is pretty noticeable since my old manual was so crisp and simple. The second problem is a bit more complex: I think that GM really "over-overdrived" the 6th gear for fuel economy. The car simply has a dead feeling in 6th, even though you are getting great economy etc etc etc. The problem is especially noticeable on freeways around the city, where there is often a need for pretty sharp acceleration even when at freeway speeds, and a need to quickly slow down then speed back up. I found that I had to shift down to get the car around obstacles quickly, or if I slowed down even a little had to shift down to get out of the deadzone 6th, and that seems really out of place with a car with this much power and delays reaction time to problems. Leaving it in fifth seems sort of stupid, somehow. The bottom line is that I seem to have to pay way too much attention to shifting the car and watching the revs etc, and it totally lacks that neat jump in and "snick-snick-snick" of my old C3. Anyway, I will keep looking and trying cars out. Thanks for all the replies and encouragement!

The ZF6 is a different kind of beast. I can't complain much about it however. Noise lessened and shifting improved when I put in Red Line MTF. I owned an LT4 car a few years ago and really loved it. So much that I upgraded my old 92 with LT4 stuff and the Hot Cam. There are some pretty decent LT4 cars out there so keep looking.

Chris, a couple of items to address.......6th gear is REALLY tall...like <2,000 rpm @ 80 m.p.h. and I have a Hurst short throw shifter (really feels like a Muncie ) vice the factory shifter...the CAGS bypass is worth it's weight in time and money, the light is fun to ignore.....Top speed is in 5th gear anyway, avoid 6th in Houston traffic. The combination of power to burn, ABS, precise steering, and traction control is a god-send in traffic here.

Greg

Thanks, Greg. Yeah, I noticed about 40 mph per 1000/rpm, too. In fifth gear, about what mph per 1000 do you see?

One of the best cars I have ever owned. Had mine going on 2 years now. Typical Vette issues, but ZERO problems with the Grand Sport engine:)
