Is the LT4 hot cam a worth while peice to install? About how much H.P. to the wheels does the cam give you and 1/4miles performance?

Where is the cheepest place to buy it?

Thanks, Jason

I am not sure about where the cheapest place is to buy it,

but I was curious if all you are plannign to do is the cam, meaning that the Hot cam is a good increase over stock, but depending on what type of power levels you are looking for will also determine what you want to install

IS the LT4 Hotcam usable in a L98 and what needs to be done to use it, such as head work or intake work to achieve the horsepower gains that you mentioned?

The duration for the Hotcam is a bit big for a TPI intake, but it can be made to fit. I believe the end of the hotcam is different from the regular SBC cams, because the hotcam is driving the WP/Opti. I think the best place to get one is Superior Chevrolet, get ahold of Jeff Kopp. Website should be something similar to that.

I wouldnt put this in an L98 unless i had a Miniram on it. Hotcam makes its best power at a higher rpm than the TPI will flow sufficient air for.

Thanx for the info. I knew somebody here would have an answer. They always do:upthumbs

30+

92,
I have found only one dyno data point for the LT1 with a hot cam.
It was a 92 6spd. It showed 44 rwhp gain for the entire hot cam
kit, I'd guess 30 or so from the cam and 10 or so from the 1.6
roller rockers.

Springer LT4 here also posted his dyno data, on the LT4 the cam
increase hp by 30rwhp. But the Hot cam seems to be a high
rpm cam, so much of the advantage is at 6000 or above, if installed in an LT4. With the LT1, the peak hp was at 6000rpm.

With all due respect Southpaw, I think the decimal place is in the wrong spot.:) According to our 1996 LT1/LT4 Engine Comaparison, the redline on an LT1 is 5,700 rpm, and the LT4's is 6,300 rpm. The hot cam does allow for a slightly higher red line, but not enough to make 6,000 rpm useable on an LT1.

Your redline numbers are correct, but it is rather trivial to raise the rev limiter with a new chip or a reprogrammed PCM, depending on year. I am sure this is nothing new to you...

Anyway, I have read that the rods of the LT1 are not good for use above 6200 rpm in some places and others say 6400. When I finish my LT4 hot cam install in my 95, I plan to have the rev limiter set at 6000-6100.

arent the LT1 rods the same as the GM Pink Rods that the ZZ4 crate motor uses?

I dont see a problem spinning a bottom end LT1 to 6500 rpms. for 1/4 mile useage. Now sustained high rpm use at 6500 rpms (i.e. autobahn or such) I dont think so!!!

revs >>

When I had the Hot Cam in my 1997 Camaro Z28, it made it's peak power between 5900 and 6100. I spun it to 6400 regularly with no problems.

BTW: The LT1 (mid 1994 and newer) and LT4 have the same connecting rods. pre-1994.5 LT1's had regular Chevrolet forged connecting rods. Post 1994.5 LT1's and LT4's had the PM rods.

I think the main reason they don't let the LT1 rev past 5800 is because of the stamped rocker arms. The pivot balls tend to gall above 5500 or so. If you put roller rockers on it (like with the hot cam kit), you can rev it to 6400-6500 with no problem. You'd probably want to change the timing chain to a roller also at that point, but the stock one was fine in my car.

Also, the stock LT1 cam makes it's peak power around 5000rpm, so revving it to 6400 with the stock cam is futile (and probably detrimental) unless you're just trying to make it through the traps without having to shift again.

I bought a hot cam for my vette then decided to go with tpis zz9 cam because i was told the hot cam wouldnt pass california smog.I am going to put the hot cam springs and rollers in the 94 ta so not all is lost.
