My father is wanting to put an LT4 (or an LT1) in his '81 and would like to have it with a four-speed. Is this possible? Please provide any feedback, even if you think his current four-speed has to be changed to a six-speed with a new tranny.

yes its possible check out this thread that was posted a while back,dan has a lt-1 in his and 70ls1 a ls1 in his, i have a tpi in mine and few others have tpi's also.

I think it is a great idea to transplant an LT-4 to a shark. I was originially told I could not use an automatic tranny with this motor and found that to be false. I would gues that you could use your 4 speed as it should bolt right up to the block. I would be glad to share my pains and triumphs with you as I am just completing my transplant into a 75. Once you address any computer problems you should be good to go.

from what i have found, the LT1 is available for around $2,500.00 vs the LT4 which is available for around $5,500.00. does he really want the extra 30 hp to spend the extra 2500? i am slowly getting all of the items together to install an LT1/4L60 from a '93 doner into my 81. most important is that he needs to make sure he has a "high fill" for the cooling fluid to vent the steam from the heads or he will end up cooking the motor. other than that, a computer, wiring harness-let me know who he decides to use-i am leaning towards a howell, a chip that has been flashed for his application, electric fans for the radiator, and if he wants to run the standard pully assy from gm or an after market. check out the march 2000 issue of vette magazine for what an LT1 in an 81 looks like. anything else have him ask me: hottype181@yahoo.com
