LT4 LT4 Vette or 4th Gen Camaro?

1996 LT4 Topic

Well, I decided on the Corvette, and I am now spending my time learning how to drive the manual transmission and learning all about LT4 Corvettes.

The more I drive this car the better that it feels. Is this car faster than most 4th generation F-bodys? Once I get the car into 3rd and 4th gear, it just takes off. I mean, I look down and I am doing like 70 or 80 and I've gotta slow down. The LT4 seems to have much more low end torque than the LS1.

I probably should start a new post for this, but are there any must do mods for this car other than exhaust and removing the stupid skip shift? I am familiar with all of the LS1 mods from owning and modifying the Camaro, but the LT4 is new to me. Are there any suspension mods that should be done? This car has the base suspension. It feels pretty good compared to the Camaro (granted the Camaro was lowered with just about every suspension component replaced).

Sorry if I asked too many questions. Thank you for all of the replies so far. You all have been very helpful.

Nick
Mods depend on money of course:)

The basics are open air box w/K&N (most of us have that)
Throttle body air-foil (not worth much, but what the heck)
Exhaust
Throttle body bypass (take the hot coolant out of the TB, to reduce intake temps)
new MAF (ported. no screens, etc.)

For the bigger buck mods...
LT4 hotcam (all over ebay for cheap right now)
New Throttle Body (bigger)
port/polish intake and heads
headers
supercharger :)

If you like the low look, you can lower your vette an inch for about $40.

Congrats on the LT4 decision:upthumbs

The exhaust is a great mod to get ya started along w/ the K&N or like...
I'm using the SLP "Claw" which I really like (3 K&N cones)
As far as exhaust...there are alot of good aftermarket systems out there and you'll get alot of different opinions from members here. Get rid of the stock exhaust and your Vette will sound like a Vette should sound!
I have the base suspension FE1 on mine and it feels pretty good along w/ the 275/40/17's on all four corners. I'm not doing any upgrades at this point.

I agree that when driving the LT4 you can quickly be cruising at 70 or 80mph w/o any effort. What's nice is there is no mistaking how fast you are traveling at any given time because the speedo is right there in your face and easy to read.

Enjoy your new toy and keep us posted ( or at least me:) ) cuz I'm always curious about what new owners are learning/changing/modding on their Vettes!:w

I'll try to get pictures up when I get a chance. Has anyone experienced any problems changing spark plugs and wires? It looks like the stock wires and plugs are on the car and I wonder if I should just leave them alone until I start to experience poor fuel mileage. People have told me that they can be more trouble to change than they are worth. Especially if the car is running fine.

Also, this may sound like a dumb question, but does anyone know where the oil filter is? I haven't been able to visually locate it yet.

It's in the usual place, you'll need ramps & jacks if you're diy.

If you like handling I'd add big bars & adj shocks - see my sig:)

the filter is up next to one of the cats. A stupid place IMO because of the heat.

IMO, the plugs are more trouble than they are worth... unless you are having problems or are going to mod and need a different heat range.
