I have found a complete engine that is out of a truck and suposedly a 4 bolt main and is not currently running. He want 100 bucks for the complete engine. I am working on getting the casting number to see if it is a 4 bolt main. What I am wondering about is how much it would cost to bore and hone the cylanders, and deck the block and make sure all is well with the block. I would get a valve job on the world product heads that came off the broken engine, and rebuild from there. just curious on costs.

Thanks

Drew

From my site:

For those of you not familiar with my plight, it all started way back in February 2002! I've been slowly rebuilding this engine piece by piece. When it was in the machine shop I had just about everything done that you could have done to a BB, including, but not limited to: align hone, bored 0.060, magnafluxed, dipped & washed and had cam bearings and freeze plugs installed. Bored 0.06 and I had the connecting rods resized and fitted to the pistons. I also had the entire rotating assembly balanced while it was in the shop. I performed the remainder of engine assembly. That included spec'-ing the crank, connecting rods, bearings, and rings. So what is going into the engine bay is a balanced and blue printed engine.

I bought and installed the pieces as time and money would allow. The engine & tranny are in and bolted down. I installed the engine and tranny together. I removed the left front wheel & tire, the radiator and radiator support to provide enough clearance. During the installation, I found that I had to remove the drivers exhaust manifold to get it to clear.

My thinking was that since the block was going to be in the shop, I might as well have everything done.

I think the total bill was $1,500.

Here's a pic right after basic install.

Machining costs vary from shop to shop, recently I had a block cleaned and rough bored (it was quite rusty) and checked for soundness for $150 with the understanding that I would bring it back to finish it after I checked the clearances (building a stroker) the last time the total for machine work was just over $300 for cleaning boring honeing and to install cam bearings and freeze plugs.

BTW casting numbers do not indicate 2 or 4 bolt(the #s are the same) the best way is to pull the pan

2 or 4 bolt

I was aware of a few sites that would denote 2 or 4 bolt main by engine stamp suffix.

I am not sure if I will be able to look under the pan, it is not mine and have yet to purchase it to find out.

Thanks so far for the inputs.
