I cut the screen off the outlet side, but how do I get all the little pieces off that band that is in the inside? I am pulling them off with pliars, but that will take forever. Any suggestions?

On my 96 there was a snape ring holding the screen in place. Be careful removing the ring if yours has on.

There is a little ring on there, but how the heck do you get it out? That would be beautiful if I could get it out. If you want to I can take a picture of it and post it.

Now that you are this far I'm not sure I took a rachet extension & used it to force the screen out but the screen was still in one piece & the ring came out with the screen. The only thing I can think of is try to find where the 2 ring ends don't meet & get a hold of the left over screen right there & pull carefully & maybe it will pull the end of the ring out.

You're talking about the screens over the ends, right? They're held on by plastic rings that are glued in place. I took an x-acto knife and carefully worked it down between the ring and the body of the MAF. Then I cut around the ring, slowly. It eventually snapped the rest of the way off and the screen fell out by itself.

i used a pair of pliers and a razor knife and cut the screens out then pulled the ends of the wire out as best i could with the pliers and smoothed the rest down as best i could.

been like that for over 2 years now with no problem :D

did that to both sides.

My rings are definetly NOT plastic. I also tried getting underneath of them, but that was a no go. I guess it is the dremel's turn I have to look for a little bit that will grind that off.

I hope you have a Bosch MAF. If you have an AC its the wrong one. You should be able to remove the thin plastic retainers with a knife and the screen will come out ez.

Yup, that is what I ended up doing. It is not as clean as I would have liked to have gotten it but it will do. It is drying now I hope when I put it back on the car it doesn't throw a code.

Hit Home Depot and get a small carbide bit for your dremel. Also works great for porting/polishing later :).

Rich,

did you cut out the fins on your MAF?

On my first one the ends were plastic.
They had 2 indents on the plastic, just used a piece of steal across them and thy broke loose.
My New MAF I just left alone I never noticed any diff.

Nope, left the fins alone. The biggest gain was from taking the screens off, and I wanted to keep the cooling stuff in place.

BTW - you done with the laptop yet? I need to take some more readings.

I did it the long way and plucked everyone with the needle nose pliers. Hey, when you're bored and have a lot of time, you can do things the long way.

I cut out the screen then took a small screwdriver like the ones for tighting screws on glasses and gently bent the metal ring up to where I could get a pair of needle nose pliers on it. Then I just pulled it out. Easy!

Amen to that ^^^^^^:)
