MAF sensor screen

I read the archives about the pro's & con's of taking the MAF's screen out.

Question: If the screen has no function, and its removal may enhance performance, then why is the screen there in the first place???

It is a protective barrier against particles/probing breaking the delicate, $700 MAF wire. I left mine in, for the minimal gains the MAF is too costly to replace...

I looked at my MAF today. I see why the screen is there. That little wire looks like a light bulb filiment. I'd leave it in. I'm sure the screen isn't that big a deal.

Its in there more to straighten air over the MAF filament than to protect it.

I took mine out ('89 L98) about 10 years ago, have had no problems - but can't say that I noticed any performance improvement either.

Get a used one on ebay for $50, and descreen that one. That's what I did, although I haven't installed it yet.

as long as you seal your air filter in the air box correctly and tightly there is no harm to the MAF unit at all.


the screens are there to straighten out the air flow but impeding it at the same time. i removed mine and did the TB Bypass, while i cut the airbox and fitted in a K&N filter at the same time and felt a nice improvement.

1 Mod you will not feel the difference but a few mods you will
