Guys,
I'm looking at an 86 with a manual xmission, 4 speed w/ overdrive, the owner said that you need to use the OD in 2nd gear cause it will pop out if you rev it too high.
Sounds like there maybe a problem ( I never drove the car it's off the road)
Any thoughts.
Thanks,
Tom

The tranny should not pop out of gear at any speed in any gear. The OD would have nothing to do with that problem.

The 4-speed portion is just a Borg-Warner Super T10 so if it needs work, a competent tranny shop should be able to fix it. The OD is another story.

The overdrive can only be used in 2nd-4th gear. Is he say'n that the overdrive will pop out, or the 4 speed case? Also Is it only poping out when he has it in 2nd with the OD on?

The transmission popping out of 2nd direct (ie non-overdrive) is a sign of a transmission that's getting worn. I've heard a number of people complain about it, but it only really happens when you rev high in 2nd and then lift abruptly. If it pops out more often or easily, then it may need rebuilding...

Thanks Rich, yeah! I remember now that that is an indication of worn syncros... from slamming it from 1st into 2nd and not always getting it clean.
I see you are from Maryland, my daughter went to the University of Maryland she now lives and works there, (and is now a devoute Yankee hater with her Orioles lovin' boyfriend)

I also went to U of M, though the smaller UMBC campus, and my wife and her whole family also did... where in MD is your daughter? And I know I've been to Coram at some point, but I cannot place exactly where in NY it is.

Whoops. Scratch that... its out Long Island a ways, I think, and my great aunt lives there.

I've got a Super-T10 rebuild kit sitting in the garage - all new synchros and bearings and such. Was planning on trying to rebuild my own 4-speed, but with my "success" at my engine upgrade I think I'll leave it to the pros. If you buy that car, make me an offer on the kit... sounds like you'd need it as much as or more than I do.

Another possibility is extreme wear on the shifter forks. They could be so thin that they are not allowing the gear to move far enough th engage fully.

Well if you are interested in buying the C4, what shape is the rest of the car in? Miles etc. and whats his asking price? If it's a steal of a deal, the trani can always be fix'd.

Hey, I bought the 86!!! I paid 5300 for it. exterior is in great shape the interior is fair the engine runs great. I can't say how it rides but hopefully tomorrow I will have it on the road and will give you an update. I ran the carfax deal on it yesterday and there was nothing reported that was bad.
I missed out on getting an 86 original manual today on e-bay.

Burgundy is probably Dark Red metallic, which looks nice - though I'm partial to the bright red myself.

I've replaced a good chunk of the interior plastics on my 86. If you need help locating some, or figuring out how to take stuff off, just ask! I've also got a few extra pieces lying around if you need anything.

Post your VIN and your build sheet codes (inside the driver's side storage bin, behind the seat)!
