Being a relatively new C5 owner with an automatic trans (stock), I was wondering what the safe maximum speed would be in each gear. I know the lower the gear the lower the gas mileage but there are times when I like the sound of the car in a little lower gear. I sometimes wish we bought an M6 but I wanted my wife to be able to drive it occasionally since she gave her blessing to buy it in the first place. (Of course I will ower her for the next five years).

Thanks

for me in a C4 it goes:
1st 55
2nd 100
3rd 145+
OD 145 to alot :D

the transmission in the newer vettes using a 4L60E setup is not the best transmission to start playing with while your driving. they do not like being manually shifted because the computer controls the shift points. however as long you don't drop gears and romp it at the same time then beat on it as i would you'll be fine cruising around town in 2nd gear at 40 mph :L

You hit it just about right mic.

I have a 6 speed and believe me that is two gear too many. I have renamed sixth gear to sick gear. If I'm doing 65 in 6th it feels like its loafing if I get on it hard through all the gears I start to see a certain religious figure's image forming on the windshield.

My advise is to leave it in top gear and let it shift on its own. Put on an aftermarket cat-back system, an after market intake and flash it with a Predator programmer. That'll make sweet music.

'04 A4 with a 2.73 does the following:
1st - 56 MPH
2nd - 102 MPH
3rd - 151 MPH (with room to go)
4th unknown but I have been told it will actually bog down once you clear 120 MPH and down shift to third.

And I had a blast testing this to get the numbers :)

The only time I use OD is when I'm on the E-Way. Around town I'm usually in 2nd or 3rd depending on traffic. Sometimes it's easier to let the trans (in 1st or 2nd) slow the car down instead of continually hitting the brakes in stop-n-go traffic ( besides I like the sound of my corsa cat-backs). As far as the top speed for each gear, that what the tach is for, watch it not the speedo. I agree if they didn't want us to have the ability to shift hey should have only given us park-reverse and drive IMHO.
