I received an e-amil message asking me about the driveshaft loop I have installed in my C4. The member suggested I post the answers here in the C4 Mods forum in hopes of answering questions others may have as well. With that in mind, here is my response:

  • [*] What are the make and part number for the non-zerk joints? Are all six joints the same PN?
The u-joints for the driveshaft are each a different part number. According to Mike Antonick's book, Cor-Vette Specs, the factory front u-joint is PN1311 while the rear is PN1318. I do not have the part numbers available for the replacement joints I used, but then, my front joint is a different PN, because the Richmond install required a different yoke.
[*] Does it pass tech inspection?
    I don't see why it wouldn't.
[*] Did you have to get the design approved?
The rules state: "...in the vicinity of the front universal joint, all cars in competition using open driveshafts must have a retainer loop 360 degrees of enclosure, 1/4-inch minimum thickness and 2-inches wide, or 7/8-inch x .065-inch welded steel tubing, securely mounted and located within 6-inches of the front universal joint for support of the driveshaft in the event of U-joint failure."
[*] Is the D part a commercial part that was modified?
It is a Summit part, modified by welding a couple of tabs made by cutting other pieces from the kit that went unused.
[*] What is the distance back from the front of the beam to the front of the strap?
Six-inches from the front universal joint.
[*] Are the bolts threaded into the beam or are there nuts?
    Bolts with nuts.
[*] I would have thought that you would have wanted the bolts to thread into the steel adapter plate, and not the aluminum. Is there not enough room above the beam?
    The "steel adapter plate"? :confused

I hope this helps, Rich. :CAC
