I was able to meet Chris and Mark for the first time today, as well as my first encounter with a Callaway modified C6. Specifically an SC580.
We had a good lunch at Fuddruckers, and Mark took me for a ride in the SC580. Chris drove Mark's car, and my mom followed in the SS. Mark and I both thought it would be an automatic, but this is a different car than we expected.
It was very fast, and very smooth, and the sensation of speed is very low. On the one hand, you feel very safe in the car at high speed--the car is extremely well insulated from road noise, the Callaway suspension is perfectly balanced for driving on the road--I was never uncomfortable, and those optional seats are extremely comfortable once you get in them. On the other hand, I've always enjoyed having an adrenaline rush from a little fear of death when zooming around. eddevil That's just my personal preference. I like roaring downshifts, a bit of road noise, and a huge roar up front. I guess I'm a SuperNatural sort of guy, especially with a live axle at back. :cool I'm also an automatic type of guy (which I later demonstrated) unless I have time to figure out when the clutch engages...
It's a lot quieter than I was expecting. It's very obvious that one of these could be a daily driver quite easily. Chris had a lot of stuff in the trunk, so I couldn't hear much of the exhaust behind us, but the supercharger whine wasn't disruptingly loud either. It definitely breathes a lot better than a stock C6, however sounds about as loud at idle. When giving it some gas, it comes to life, and the supercharger whine sounds pretty cool.
When Chris and Mark switched back, I asked Chris if I could drive it a bit, and it went something like this:
::Chris driving::
Chris: Sure, let's switch. :uts it in neutral, grabs the handbrake, and gets out::
Me: :eek (tongue tied and thinking "I didn't mean now, I meant when we got to the Lamborghini dealership, but okay, we'll see how I do" ::crosses fingers:: ).
We both run around the car and switch, I figure out where the clutch is, and give it a shot. Bumpy start--let out the clutch too fast--rough upshift to second. Come to the red light, light turns green, and I stall it. He asks if I'd like to switch back and I agree that's a good idea as we were in traffic. For shame Brandon... for shame.
Having never driven a manual C6, I wasn't familiar with the clutch at all, so I wasn't able to just jump in and drive off. I don't drive manual cars very often (despite the SS being a 6-speed), so... (insert excuse here). ;help
It's too bad Chris had to get on the road, because I didn't get another shot at it. No time to learn it. Oh well. Overall, it was a fun time and experience 'til I emasculated myself behind the wheel. :ugh So embarrassed...
