Mid year prices

They will go up until they peak, then the folks that remember these cars will be too old to care and prices will drop. AKA The Ford Model T.

I don't care.............I'll be dead. :D

I have just acquired my first C2 ( I have a C1 also:v) and believe these cars (both drivers) will hold their value and appreciate over time. The prices I saw at Carlysle in August were up a lot over just a couple of years ago. The key to me is keeping these beauties clean, well maintained, and visible.

I drove the C2 into the business district in Leesburg VA and people literally stopped and qawked. Must of heard the word "SWEET" about 100 times from all the 30 somethings buying antiques!!:D

Hi Vaughn,

My main point was really just that you shouldn't expect to make any money off your midyear Vette.

I certainly wasn't trying to shove every midyear owner into the 40-65 box. In fact, I'm 36 and I got my Vette when I was 26. So it's clear that there are lots of reasons people buy Corvettes besides growing up with them; I was just making some generalizations that are useful in illustrating the overall dynamics of the market. Younger folks like us play a role in that market but it's a minor one, as you have undoubtedly noticed if you're a member of a local Corvette club (no offense to the gray-haired set!).

You are correct that the law of supply and demand doesn't exactly describe how Corvette prices are set (supply and demand only applies perfectly with commodity products) but it's a pretty good model. Your point was simply that supply and demand are driven by lots of different factors. That's true, and on a micro-level (car by car) you can't use it to predict what one person will pay for specific car. But at the macro level (looking at the whole market) you can predict things pretty accurately. The only exception is when you're dealing with really rare items like the hi-po big-blocks or cars with unique history.

Cheers,
Andy

Andy,

I guess my main point was I don't think there is necessarily a lack of interest in the younger crowd, just a lack of resources. I don't expect to make any real money off my car, not in a strict investment sense. Of course had I put the money I paid for my car into the stock market last year, I'd be HATING life right now...

My other main point was a preemptive strike against 396 Rat's comment. I don't see our vettes EVER going the way of the Model T... Maybe if this country ever sees a proliferation of audobon-like roads where top speeds can really be pushed, but short of that, I think everything that our cars personify will be highly sought after for YEARS to come. Everything Viking427 wrote about what our cars personify was spot-on. About the ONLY thing the Model T has going for it is its history. Beyond that, they're slow, ugly, and impractical. Did I mention SLOW? The only way I see the market dropping out for our cars is if states legislate it away.

Cheers,
Vaughn

Beyond that, they're slow, ugly, and impractical.

The model T is an extreme example. But you never know in 70 years some one actually may be saying the same about our cars.

Think about how far cars have come in the last 70 years. Now imaging how much further they will go with todays tecnology

YA Never Know

"From 1909 to 1927, the Ford Motor Company built more than 15 million Model T cars. Without a doubt, Henry Ford transformed the economic and social fabric of the 20th century. " In 1927 a car every 24 seconds."

This was just an example. Fuel will be the main reason our cars
will fall in price. Folks will refer to them as " Old gas burners"
I have seen a similar peak with Midyrs, then a valley, now another peak. I do not own my car as an investment, but in the past 7yrs it has beaten any investment that I own!
I look for prices to come down a bit with housing as interest rates and the stock market go back up. But who knows? (No one really) I plan to be around another 40 yrs. Will post my findings on midyear prices then.
Another thing to think about. Corvette owners today (all yrs)
are mainly in there 50's. Food for thought.......:z
What will they be doing in 20-30 yrs?

hummm....this post got me thinking.

I'm sure that I'm in the minority as far as age is concerned too. I was 31 when I bought my 66 in 02, and obviously I was not growing up with the mid years in my hey days. Instead I had the late c3's and c4's around. Yet when I had the opportunity to buy a car for myself a couple of years ago, instead of going for a newer c5 or even a c4 which I grew up with, the c2 really did it for me. Strictly because I have a passion for older cars and cars in general.

When I bought the 66, I also thought from an investment stand point that it would always appreciate over time. But some valid points were made in the previous posts. While I plunked down some serious cash for a 37 year old car, I'm sure that again I am the minority as far as the type of buyer the c2's attract. The typical c2 buyer will diminsh over time and it will become a question as to whether or not the newer generations will care enought to own one. Maybe.

Also, another valid point was made. Gasoline is a limited supply, so all gas guzzlers are doomed sooner or later, which would mean that some of these cars, if still around, will make for very expensive art :D , but by then, I'm counting on being dead too :gap, bottom line, there's no price tag on your happiness.

Ain't that the truth.

I sure didn't buy my mid-year as an investment.
The fact that it has not depreciated as much as my C5 when I bought it brand new and drove it off the dealer's lot doesn't feel bad though.

Somebody should jump on that '58 retractable hardtop concept car. They cut 200K off of it's price. At least you would never see another one at a show.

Tom

Just to put in my 2 cents, I believe that because the midyears possess such timeless styling and that they will always be a demand for them. Maybe not as strong as now. I agree that probably the majority of C2 owners are in their 50s & 60s, locally I know of two guys, one is 31 and the other 28 who recently bought midyear convertibles.
