When I first start the car and pull out and turn the wheel, there is this moaning from under the hood, it goes away after a mile or so but it sounds like the power steering may be going bad ? it has the right level of fluid in it. it does it turning the wheel either way, any ideas, since the service manual has nothing

If fluid is old/dark, first try flushing the P/S system with new P/S fluid. After flush, bleed P/S system.

If groaning remains, you may need a new P/S pump.

With cooler morning temperatures, a Corvette may exhibit signs of ‘morning sickness’ in the form of sluggish steering. While this symptom usually disappears as the engine warms up, it’s a good warning sign that your car’s rack and pinion system could use a check up.

Flush P/S system with plenty of fresh fluid!! I like to remove return line at pump and put a plug in pump return.Stick the return hose in a 2 gal plastic bucket under car and have someone start and slowly turn wheels left to right while I pour a gal of power steering fluid through system. and then reinstall return hose, and add 1 - 8 oz bottle of Lucust Power Steering Conditioner Stop Leak and Top off with fresh fluid!! This Conditioner is the best I've ever seen, will smooth out a sticky rack or conventional steering box in less than 50 mi.!! Works Great on Hydro-Boost Brake systems too!!:upthumbs Ask me how I lost my front Teeth!!;LOL

I replaced my old fluid with synpower about a year ago and my power steering is quiet even on cold mornings when the temp is well below zero.

Powersteering

I experienced that too this weekend. My car has been parked in a cold garage for about two months and when I turned the steeringwheel the powersteering sounded and the steeringwheel was a little bit harder to turn than usually.

After some left to right movements at the steeringwheel the steering got loose and started working as normal. It was about -5 degrees Celsius below zero.

I know that my car haven´t been driven enough and therefore I will change the powersteering fluid soon.
