Has anyone heard any rumors/issues surrounding Mobil 1 15-50? I just went to our base service store, that normally carries it and they told me they've had it on back order for some time now. Drove down to our local Auto Zone and they were out. One of the managers told me there some kind of recall or something on it (he wasn't sure, just knew they couldn't get any). He also told me that just last week the Checkers across the street from them called looking for some, because they were in the same boat. :confused

The good news he did tell my Pep Boys might still have some and they had 4 cases in the back (but none on the shelfs). The guy there told me he hadn't heard anything, but that they hadn't tried to order any in a few months.

Just curious if anyone else has run into this or heard anything? If not it could just be the shops in my area.

Hmmmm...................Not aware of any issues. In fact, I just picked up a case of Mobil 1 15-50 the other day at my local Pep Boys as I had a coupon for a free quart.

its all over the place here. If you get desperate and need some shipped out let me know.

Thanks, I figured it was just a local and hopefully temperary thing.

*** IMPORTANT *** Mobil 1 has changed their oil

Okay just so everyone knows Mobile 1 has changed their oil line up . The NEW MOBILE 1 EXTENDED PERFORMANCE OIL is the new oil that we need to use They have several versions but this is the only one with 15W50 rating The new oil has more cleaners and BETTER PROTECTION . Check out their website FYI

Although we still have plenty of the "old stuff" on the store shelves, thanks for the info Pete on the new stuff - I can still remember the "original" Mobil1 ;)

Thanks for the info, unfortunately, most of the stores around here don't have any of the old or new stuff on their shelfs. Pet Boys seems to be the only one with some of the old stuff left.

Are they discontinuing the "old" stuff? They have both at Walmart here b/c i just changed the oil in my civic with the "new" stuff. Its a dollar more.

There's plenty of the old stuff down here as well.

So which is better, the old stuff or the new stuff?
Should I pick up several cases of the old stuff?
Does the new stuff cost more if there are more addatives?
Or is the new stuff just a repackaging(marketing) effort to get people to try it?

Was just reading another thread (on another forum) and from what I can gather the new stuff is supposed be better and costs about $4-$5 more per case. Maybe someone else can confirm this.

Yes, they are changing to the new gas -api rating for extended oil changes for BMW and Mercedes.
Although BMW and Mercedes mandate the 0W30 or 0W40 weight all the grades will be changed, so yes you are getting more for your money.
I was told that the price will be going up about $2.00 a case but in my book well worth it.

By the way, I thought all the LT engines required 5W-20 or 5W30, I can't remember witch. So whats with using the 15W50??? IF I'm right 15W50 could be a real disaster!

My '87 L98 is using 15-50, as specified by Callaway. Tattooed right on one of my intercoolers -- "Use Mobil 1 formula 15-50" :beer

No worries :cool Our engines came w/ 15w50 when new ;)

They actually validated the use of Mobil 1 oil for the rest of the Corvette line :upthumbs
