Does anybody know where to get Mobile 1 oil filters on the internet? The only place I can find within a 50 mile radius is Autozone. They now charge $11.99 per. I was hoping to get them a little cheaper in bulk (4-5).

I stopped by Walmart last night and they had a store brand with the same specs as the UPF-44's at $1.97/filter. I couldn't believe it. I read on another post that these are identical filters made by the same manufacture but under the Walmart brand's name. FYI.

Barrier,
I used to get them on-line at the Mobil 1 eStore, but they have shut the site down, however here's a link you can try!

I just read a very interesting article on oil filters today at work. I am sorry I can't remeber the web site but will get it tomorrow and post it. Long story made short you won't believe which of the name brand filters were very poorly constructed. I'll let you make your own mind up after reading the article but Fram was one of the worst.:(

Would you be referring to this article? There are also others. Most of them blast FRAM as expensive junk. Their money goes into sales and marketing, not engineering and manufacturing... They also usually praise Mobil 1 as one of the best filters you can get.

Just keep in mind most of these websites articles, while good, are 2 to 3 years old. I hope some of these vendors have gotten better quality by now...

I know the Mobil 1 filter is the exact same as a cheaper filter.... Anyone try the new Purolator filter... I think it is called Purolator Pro or something like that, I just bought one for my Vette. Discount Auto Parts had a display with one cut open so you could see the quality of construction. It looks like it is made very well, and the price is pretty good (5 or 6 bucks). The one thing I hate about the mobil 1 filter (which is why i stopped using them) is the round bottom. It is a real pain to get off an all round filter on a vette. I use an oil filter socket to take them off, which is much easier, but not compatible with mobil 1

I was actually thinking of using the K&N filter, but since I like to use the long model HP-3002 (more volume, more filtration) and the K&N has a nut welded to the base to facilitate removal I was concerned with the additional length which is 1/2" longer than the other long filters. My '86 has the Z51 option which uses the oil cooler under the filter and extends the filter down about an inch or so.
Does anybody have any experience with that usage?

The article I read on oil filters was at minimopar.net I think it was under the tech section. I don't remember when it was written but it seemed to have a lot of good info. Hope this helps some!:beer

I guess I'm not explaining this well enough. I pretty much have decided upon the Mobil1 or the K&N. They both seem to be very close in all respects except price.
My question is how many people with the Z51 option have used the longer AC35 oil filters as opposed to the shorter stock AC25 oil filters, and if so do you think there is enough ground clearence for the 1/2" longer K&N HP-3002 as opposed to the shorter HP-2002( both can be had for $10. delivered from a mail order source).
The Mobil1 long model M1-302 does not have the welded nut on the end which makes the K&N longer, but the Mobil1 costs $2. more.

You may want to look at the Amsoil micron filter...they use it for the Carrol Supercharger setup for the vette. Because it has better filtering capabilities for the oiling if the supercharger.

That is why i was trying to let you know the Mobil 1 filter is the exact same as another, so you could get the longer filter for less money, and you know it will work.... i will try to find the brand and post so you can hopefully get the best of both worlds.

Ok... the Mobil 1 filter is made by Champion Labs.... It is actually rated below the Purolator Pure One filter. The Purolator Pure One can be found at Discount Auto Parts for sure, so you may just want to go with that one... this is the one that I just bought for my 'Vette, and I know it is much less than $10.

Thanks, I saw them at PeP Boys, I'm going to check them out.
Thanks to all for help.

I have a Purolator Pure One on my 94 . It was a top rated filter in a filter comparision that I saw somewhere on the internet. It was cheap and bought it at Discount auto.

It appears that ther are several really good filters out there but knowing which one is the problem. It seems that the expensive ones are good but you can get a cheaper one that does the same. I have learned that Fram are not as good as they say they are, in fact the comparison rated them really low. Seems that they are glued together, and aren't too good at filtering oil.

The guy who did the comparison acutually took all the filter apart and measured the amount of filter paper in each one. He also checked for a number of other points such as gasket attachment, and other key features.

2 weeks ago I bought 6 CASTROL Max Pro Plus filters for my vette on Ebay for less than $2 each. Check it out, I bought lots of parts dor my Vette on Ebay at a fraction of the dealer or catalog suppliers.

Let's think about this with come common sense. The ACD UPF44 is made by Champion Labs and is one of the best engine oil filter designs ever sold to consumers for OE replacement use. It's a damn shame that ACD discontinued all the other Ultrguards except the UPF44, but...that's a rant for a different thread.

Now for some common sense...in a question: you really think *any* filter manufacturer can make an oil filter with the specifications of the UPF44 for $1.97 a filter and turn a profit?!

For the Gen 3 V8 in a C5, the UPF44 is the best oil filter on the market right now.

For other Corvette engines, either the Mobil 1, (which I believe is also made by Champion Labs) or the K&N Performance Gold, which also is made by Champion, are the best choices.

As for what I use, currently on all my cars except my ZR-1 I use ACDelco Ultraguards. I bought-up a supply of them after the line was discontinued. ACD never made an Ultraguard for the LT5 engine, so on the ZR1 I've used the K&N Performance Gold in the past but the next time I need a filter I'm going to try the Mobil 1, mainly because I heard a "rumor" from one of my sources that the M1 oil filter is very similar to the core design used by Champion Labs in the Ultraguard.

After reading the internet articles others have refered to, I recently switched to a K&N from Fram. The first thing I noticed upon start up was that the oil pressure was 3 or 4 psi higher on the guage. Above 190 degrees at idle it used to be 17 psi, now its 23 psi. Cold it never got above 55 psi, now it's at 61 psi. Not bad for 120,000 miles. I'm not going to use anything else.

ZR-1 oil filters

hib, you should point out that the ZR-1 oil filter must have a anti drain back valve because it is mounted upside down. i have seen ZR-1s with other filters that had the bearing death rattle on startup because the filter was empty on startup. i think the reason that GM quit making the UPFs was because the self service autoparts stores were getting ripped off by people putting the UPF filter in a standard AC filter box and checking out. if GM can not mass merchdise the the filters they can not make any money.
