The car started idling rough about 2 weeks ago (would sometimes shut off after coming to a stop at a light), and a few days ago the service engine light came on and the throttle got VERY unresponsive. I could floor it and count to 3 before the RPM's came up. I thought this might be a problem with the fuel pump, and given the car's age, it seemed logical. Well, I replace the fuel pump yesterday (along with the strainer and the fuel filter), but the problem persists.

I pulled the codes and got a 33 and a 42 (for a 1985 coupe). The book says these refer to the MAF and the HEI module.

My question is this: I've already spent money on parts I may have not needed (but then again, it didn't hurt to replace them). But the MAF and HEI are a whole other story. Is there any way to test the MAF and HEI before spending $400 to replace them? My Chilton's says to check the "C" terminal on my MAF to get "about .5V and idle and 4.7 @ WOT"

But if I disconnect the MAF, then it's not sensing/reporting anything, and where is the mysterious C terminal?

So, does anyone have any semi-detailed testing procedures they can pass along to me?

Always suspect the MAF realys before the MAF.

I learned this one the hard way. I replaced 2 MAFs before I found out it was the relay. I dont know much about the L98 system though.

thanks, but...

Thanks for all the responses guys, but, I've looked for the relay and burnoff sensor. I can only find them for 86 year model and later. The only thing I can find for the 85 is the the entire MAF sensor.

Any more ideas, or am I missing something?

I don't think so. Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I believe the '85 had a MAF controller piggybacked on the ECM and no relays.

Here is the module...mass sensor & burnoff... for the '85....#24....part #14080620.....52 & 53 are the relays for the '86's and up........
