Yeah, know what you mean. I'm not even going to tell you what I paid for my 2818 carb......:cry

Was Bruce able to help you out on the Carb? Or did you end up bending over?

Heh ..Did You Sell your Battle Tank yet???

I bit the bullet and bought a complete rebuilt/refurbished carb off eBay. If Bruce comes up with another, I may buy it for a spare.

My old Tank is still in my yard. Hard to sell since it looks like crap, but I'd like to recoup some $ for the new engine and trans that are in there.

Tell you guys a funny one...last month somebody bought a chrome wing nut for the air cleaner for around $80.00. I happened to post on the NCRS board how ridiculous it has become that people are spening this much money so when being judged then can gain a few points. That the judging from NCRS in some respects has a bearing on NOS and OEM parts. Well did I get landbasted, then I receive several emails from the person who sold the part, telling me the person who bought it was an NCRS friend etc.

It never ceases to amaze me the money that is being spent for restoration. OK I am guilty too., but not to the limit of spending $20. plus dollars for valve caps, or tire weights, or wing nuts...... I much rather spend my money on the correct Master Cylinder or the correct valve cover etc.

I guess I will get flamed for this one too....but somewhere and sometime we got to get back to reality on the NOS items....

You know, the really sad thing is, that this same cap is made, and being installed on new cars today! You could walk through almost any parking lot and come up with at least a thousand of them! When I need them for judging, I go down to my local Discount Tire outlet, and they will give me a dozen or so out of their scrap valve stem bucket for nothing!

I don't disagree, but how crazy people want to get when they buy parts is purely a personal decision, and some obviously don't apply any sort of "points-per-dollar" equation - they just "gotta have" that elusive part. I've always gone on the basis that I have up to 270 points to "spend" on deductions and still be able to Top Flight the car, and focus on what areas can gain me the most points while spending the least money. Of course, if you're going for Duntov, where you have to score 97% with no driving points, the "points-per-dollar" equation can get kinda crazy.

Corvette people aren't the only ones who go over the edge occasionally - get a load of this '69 Camaro hood pad:

I tend to agree here...we all are gulity of going overboard..if it's something we just gotta have.

About 5 years ago...I hopped in a friends van and drove down to Bollingreen Area From NJ....to pick up a set of Vintage super large speakers that I bought on ebay. They are kinda rare and this was a second set that I just had to have. I got a grate deal on them and paid next to nothing as the seller didn't know what he had.

How ever..it all averaged out in the end when I figured gas...toll's...lodging..etc back into the cost of the speakers. Look.....were Corvette guys.....this is wht we do....;LOL

I guess its kinda nice to know we ain't the only ones, and that example should help dispell the notion that the Corvette parts $$ issue has been created by the NCRS

John Z...

Hey I agree with you, during my own restoration I have spent a little more then I should have on some parts, because I want perfection and want to make a positive impression whan I get my car finally judged (hopefuly in May at a Regional). But at the same time, I really think their are some limits each of us have, unless we have a money tree. When is the line drawn, I guess that line is for each of us as individuals to draw and not cross. But do these people really understand the points/dollar as you described?

Remember the post I made about NCRS Judging etc. Well I did take yours and several other NCRS members advice and bought ALL the books and CDs and have buried my nose in them. I am finding things in my restoration that can be fixed without spending a lot of money, and also understanding the judging a little more, and realizing to get top flight first time out is rather rare when you have to almost start at ground zero, like I had to do. Getting flights is a process of steps. Getting the car judged is simply understanding the next steps that are needed if you want to participate in the NCRS judging. What is important to me is the challenge of restoring this car and doing by the guidelines, but also trying to keep things within reason... A

gain John, to me personally, a $80.00 wing nut is unreasonable...to then next guy, well maybe he dreams of owning an original Chrome wing nut and that is his part to dream about, so he is willing to spend the money. However the point trying to be made is it drives up the prices...on everything. I could not believe the prices in Hemmings last month on mid-years. I don't think there was a single one below 35K.

FYI the same guy who sold the wing nut is still selling them again on ebay, however last time I saw he had no biders after several days.....I am wondering how his latest auction will close.... John Z you are a great contributor on the board and I hope one day to meet you, I read all you posts and learn...Thanks

If you need Wing Nut and are willing to pay or just track the auction:
