I know there were some changes in the Q-Jet, over the years, due to emissions nonsense, as well as reliability.

For starters, I know that they changed to a smaller float after a certain point (good change - smaller float means more fuel capacity in the bowl)

I know that they also restricted the diameter of either the primaries or secondaries, as well as certain carbs having limited opening angles on the secondaries.

I want to get a carb from a junkyard, do some research on building Q-Jets for perfromance, and then rebuild it to my own specs. So, I'd like to figure out which "core" is going to be best. I'd like to get one that is after the float-size change, but avoid anything that will be restrictive (particularly if the restriction is not easily changed, like the diameter of the throat, or such).

Any ideas what years/models I should ask for at the junkyard?

Joe

I would think an 80 would be the most refined and it's not computer controlled. However, you may want to go with an older pre-emission unit.

Joe, I'm also going to rebuild a QJet, and this guy from another forum recommended the book by Doug Roe. So, I'm going to buy that.

Have fun! :)

Since I had to order some parts, I threw that book, Rochester Carburators by Doug Roe in also. I haven't read much of it yet, but from paging through it, it looks great. The pictures alone are worth the price, and when I get around to actually reading the text, I'm sure I'll learn a lot.

Just thought I'd pop this back up.

I'm definitely getting that book, before I start pulling a carb apart and can't remember how it goes back together :)

Exactly. :D Me and Rick are working this out, and when I get this carb, I'm definitely going to order this book. I can't wait to dive into this. Should be very interesting and fun. :) :D
