I think i may have a broken motor mount.
There are some scratch marks on my fan shroud where the fan has hit it.

I've looked at summit and there are a few choices when it comes to motor mounts. Has anyone replaced theirs? If so, what do you recommend?

Thanks!

I've replaced engine mounts many times. While they might not be as easy to find now as they were 10-20 years ago, it shouldn't be too difficult because millions of various GM products used the same mount(s). Once you find the mounts, simply read the service manual and then replace the mounts. The executive summary is that you'll pull the through bolts, use some type of jacking device to lift and support the engine. Remove and replace the two mounts. Lower the engine then reinstall the through bolts.

Starter removal and maybe even partial removal of the exhaust may be necessary.

But...read the service manual to get the details.

I'd say the average DIY, given the right tools and the parts, can do it in a long afternoon.

I've done them before- they aren't too bad. Like Hib said... you can do them in an afternoon.

You may need to shift the jack around a little bit to get the bolts to line up again. Once its lined up- smooth sailing from there.

A couple of extensions, a universal, and a 9/16 (maybe 1/2... it has been a while!) socket will do the trick.

Thanks for the tips on how to do it. I've had a few projects where i got 1/2 way through, got stuck, and started posting. Now i try to post before i get too greasy to type.

Several sites sell motor mounts. They have rubber and solid steel mounts. I am trying to decide between the two. Thanks for the tip about vibration with the steel ones.

Any other thoughts or comments?

Thanks everyone!

If you like your spark wires to run like they originally did now is your change. Wire number 1,2,3 and 4 run between the engine and engine mount now way (I know off) to change them without loosening the engine mounts.

Definitely need to change the motor mounts.

What is the best way to lift the engine?
I'm nervous about using a jack under the motor. I think i'd crush the oil pan or rip a hole in it.
I could buy an engine hoist (makes it a much more expensive project).

Those of you that have done this, how did you do it?
I REALLY don't want to break anything during this project.

Thanks!

Moter Mount replacement.

I drove my Vette onto my ramps, that only gave me 7" of room, it was tight but doable. The right side is easy. The left side has a "S" shaped bracket that goes from the block to the power steering pump and is bolted to one of the motor mount bolts. I needed a helper with a pry bar to move that bracket out of the way to remove and replace that motor mount.
Once I got the bolts loose I used a floor jack with some wood under the oil pan to lift the motor just a little to get the motor mount out. Don't jack it up to much or the fan will hit the fan shroud. Just a 1/4 or 3/8 of lift was enough to get them out and back in. PG.

A hydraulic jack and a piece of wood goes a long way to shimmy something into place. The wood will give so you don't smash anything.

I made a "saddle" years ago (2x6 base, 1x6 sides) that's about 1/8" wider inside-to-inside than the width of the oil pan, and the sides are about 1" higher than the depth of the pan; jack on the bottom, and it lifts the engine on the oil pan rails, not on the pan itself. If you jack on the bottom of the pan, even with a piece of wood, you run the risk of deforming the bottom of the pan into the oil pump pickup and restricting oil flow into the screen (there's only 3/8" clearance there by design, and it doesn't take much to reduce it). You DON'T want to deal with the fallout from that. :)

That "saddle" idea was great. It did the job perfectly.

Unfortunately, I got the old one out and compared it to the new one and realized that the old one was a much higher quality mount than my new one.

So i returned what i bought and ordered some heavy duty mounts. I think that if the motor could destroy good mounts, then it will destroy cheap mounts in no time.

Thanks for everyone's help and ideas!

HELP!

Hey everyone.
Driver's side motor mount was broken.

I've gotten the new mounts bolted to the block on both sides, but I can't get the frame bolt through the holes.

I've tried raising the block, i've tried pry-bars.
Beginning to run out of ideas.

Is there a trick, or do i just need to keep working at it until it fits?

Thanks!

I finally got it put back together.
It had been 3 weeks since it was running.

It sure was great to drive again.

Thanks for all of your help!
