MPG Expectations, New Engine and Tranny

I'm probably nuts, but does anyone know what kind of gas mileage I can expect if I replace my 1979 L-48 engine and 3sp automatic with a GM crate motor and an automatic with overdrive? I currently get 13 MPG. I am toying with the idea of using my 79 corvette as a daily driver instead of buying a new car that won't be half as fun to drive.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Pretty much the same. With a crate engine, you'll still have your same 4 barrel. But being newer and stronger you probably will want to wring it out more. The OD trans will help but for that kind of money you could get a beater to take the abuse of your bad days at work. Trust me, as fun as it sounds, there will be days where you don't want your Vette seeing the way you look!!!! But hey, she's your baby, treat her as you will. Just my opinion.

If you drive it as it sits the money you save would more than make up for the extra gas you purchase. If you drive it for 20 years you will have spent enough to buy a $15,000 new car but you will have forefieted 20 years of driving fun.

Every mile per gallon increase will save you about $100 per year if you drive 15,000 miles a year

You're right, I should probably not use the vette as a daily driver any way. I drive 30K miles a year. I will get a Prius and have fun with the vette on weekends.

A newer engine with a OD trans and fuel injection will give you increased gas milage, I bought a C5 for a daily driver because it gets so much better milage then my C3 (my C3 had issues that I now can address since I drive the C5); the C3 gets more looks and is a different type of car.
You could put in a L98-OD trans and change your rear to a 3:08 and get good gas milage in a C3 and it will be stronger then your l48 :cool

I have my old 68 GMC to play with.
The milage isnt any better but I dont have to do so much cleanup if it rains.
