I have read through past posts on the MSD ignition and still wondering if there are any benifits to gain for the C4-L98 Engine . I was told it would improve my fuel usage. I am wondering if it changes the hp.

All I can say about MSD is from my own personal experiance.. I have used it on my 87 Monte Carlo and it seemed to run much better with it.. but the pickup coil in the dist. was on it's way out.. I havn't noticed a diff. in fuel economy with it.. I now installed my 6AL on my vette (LT1) and it didn't seem to make any real noticeable change.. I don't know if the benifit is worth the cost on it.. but I had bought it a long time ago because of all the hype about it. Anyway.. I'm going to go drink my self silly... :beer :crazy :Roll :L

Your Acceleration will greatly improve
Your Fuel Mileage will greatly improve
And your ignition will be up to date if you ever decide to modify the car. I personally love mine and looking to improve models.

HEI is fine to 6500

The stock ignition system works fine to 6500 RPM, says my Vette expert. I agree. With all components in good shape (wires, rotor, plugs and cap) I doubt you'll see any improvement. I have heard all the hype about this, but any ignition system only uses whatever voltage needed to jump the spark plug gap after any losses enroute.

If your system has downgraded due to age/mileage, then those parts should be changed anyway. The multiple spark discharge is attractive, but can mask other problems.

I have a new MSD-6 mounted, that I do not intend to connect, after more research. The GM HEI fires my hi-perf 406 just fine all the way to 6500 RPM redline. I will spend money when it makes an improvement. My application simply does not call for MSD, even at well over 500 hp.

While not the most popular opinion here, I recommend spending your bucks on checking the condition of your wires, etc., first.

I've used MSD Ignition products for many years on engines that are modified and produce significantly more performance than stock. MSD products have always met my expectations. The company has good customer support.

That said, a stock or mildly modified L98 is proabably not going to see a practical performance increase after the addition of an MSD Ignition box.

Once you get to the point where you're adding nitrous oxide injection or other modifications that push the power past 50hp over stock, then you might need to consider an MSD.

Tks for the info, it's interesting on how things work or not work for different applications. I think i will start with wires, plugs, etc as i just bought this vette a month ago. I have all winter to make any mods as i put it away till the spring.

MSD makes a difference on L98 cars, but the difference is related to how many mods you have as well... hardly any mods = hardly any difference. On LT1/4 cars, MSD is a waste of money.... Another thing to look at is cost/benefit... you can do alot of other stuff with that MSD cash, and the other mods will typically give you more bang for your buck

Well I gotta be the sticker hehe But I gained 4 MPG with it on two separate vehicles and in the acceleration there was a NOTICABLE improvement.

Cars we've done with MSD (6A and 6AL boxes)

1994 Grand Cherokee 5.2L
1985 Corvette L98 (Mine)
1991 GMC Stepside 5.7L (Biggest difference)

Hey Im a fan of the system. Ive never been disappointed with MSD and the thing is only like 250 bucks. For that money Id have to give it the best bang for the buck mod Ive seen other than a PROM change over.

The Corvette has been modified but the other two were bone stock minus Cat Converters.
