Any body done straight pipe (muffler eliminators), if so, did you fab your own or
did you buy something like is in the Mid-America or Ekler's catalog?

Is there any muffler out there which is truly straight through, as good as a pipe?

...wondering if I should just pick up a set of LT1 mufflers at Carslile, cut the tips off, buy some 2 3/4" pipe, and have it welded up ala Vettelt193, or if I can get something better looking for just a bit more.

Thanks for sharing!

Get an exhaust shop to fab something, no need to use MAD or Ecklers. It'll most likely be much cheaper.

i'm looking at these....

TPiS Corvette Muffler Systems

200-018.jpg

For the '84-'91 Corvette L-98 we offer two cat-back systems. The early Corvette has a 4-bolt flange for the converter, the late model has a 2-bolt flange. Up to a 40 HP gain! Tremendous reduction in back pressure. Much better performance than after-market mufflers that don't replace the rear Y-pipe. This system is the ideal bolt-on. It has a very sporty tone and features a 3-1/2" diameter pipe from the back of the catalytic converter. The pipe then splits into two 3" pipes which then go into a pair of 3-chamber Flowmaster mufflers that are made to our specifications. Installs in minutes. No cutting or drilling necessary.

i am interested in the Rear Y Pipe only. it is larger than the stock 3" main pipe and the 2 1/2" "Y" pipes.

does it bolt up directly to the cat? looks like it would cause the cat has a BIG lip that that 3" stock one bolts too.

where can i buy this Rear Y Pipe? Reason i ask is i am interested in these Muffler Eliminator's

these are for 84-90 vettes and are oversized by a 1/2" cause i'm looking for a Rear 3 1/2" run into 3" Y Pipe. i'm not sure if they will fit a 93 though.

if you go with straight pipes from a muff shop you'd still need tips or get your cut off and welded on the straight pipe for looks.

Muffler Elems.

I got mine from Corvette Central. Tips were welded to the pipes, not a clamp together (as well as the best price). My local shops did not have the dies to bend 2 3/4 pipe no none could make it. I love the sound, but I did dynamat the inside of the car after the switch.

I did it on my 84. I have the cat still and manual trans.
I think it sounds great and was in expensive.
I got mine at mid-America vettefest in the swap area and the pipes did not fit properly ( but thats why they were in the discount area and were cheap). But I had a pipe shop bend the pipes and weld the LT-1 tips on it and I love it.

Some people may think its too loud, but I think its perfect.

Its a low throaty rumble at idle, and when opened up it it still throaty but louder. And I have not been pulled over for it yet (4 years theyve been on there).

Also, just so you know, I dont have the resonator things the newer cars have.:_rock :v :Steer

Straight pipes are LOUD, you're aware of that aren't you? :L

Straight pipe isn't bad on 92-96 cars because the resonator really cuts the sound down. L98 cars didn't have a resonator, so straight pipe is really loud on them

dburgjohn,
What material are they made of? How long have you had them, and how well have they held up? Did you need any other hardware, or did the shop just use existing brackets and weld it up?

--As for the sound: I tried RichR's L98 with the Powereffects on it. I didnt even hardly notice the legendary "drone" resonance. My cats and resonators will be my mufflers...

--So has anybody tried the Corvette Central "straight thru" mufflers for $229 /pair? I'm leaning against that as too expensive.

are you talking straight pipe, or are they actually mufflers? in either case, i say save the weight (LT1 mufflers are big enough to be garbage cans, and are not light) and go with straight pipe from a local shop, shouldn't cost you more than $150-$200 installed.

I got headers and the Muffler Eliminators. I kept the resonator. The sound is AWESOM. Everywhere I go, people tell me how mean my car sounds. Espically after I got the Hotcam installed. I did the eleminators myself. I got some pipe, cut the mufflers off. Then I cut the tips off. I welded the tips and the pipes together and then welded the pipes back to the car. I had to have a shop fix the new pipe so it would slide over the old pipe. The whole process took about a day and cost me about $100.

I had the pipes installed early this year. They seem to have held up well. They came with everything needed. The material is as good (thick) as the original pipes. The shop cut the mufflers, put the pipes on and welded them up. If you like the sound, I give Corvette Centrals pipes four stars!

I saw CC's low restriction muffler at Carslile and the eliminators are the same construction, looks like either is a good choice.

Anybody tried those CC magnaflow mufflers?

They are constructed of straight, perforated pipe, surrounded by sound deadening material. I wonder if the turbulance induced by the perforations would be a significant restriction?

I just bought tips for mine and had the shop fabricate the rest. The total for labor was 50 bucks. If you're using the lt1 tips you just pay for labor.
straight pipes are loud with a torque converter since you'll be in the 2400 to 3000 rpm range a lot.

This is all they have to fabricate. probably 12 inches of pipe.

the look is all with the tips you buy.

Bought muffler elims from Corvette Sports (920-467-2833) when at Bloomington Gold in June. They were $135 and came with stainless tips. It cost $35 for Tuffy to put them on. They had to make pipes to match up to the elim's 2 1/2 in diameter. They are awsome. My only muffling is now done by the precats and the stock cat. I've heard comments from a few folks saying "that sounds like a Corvette". I would equate it to the sound that a mid-year big block with side pipes makes as it goes by. I freakin LOVE these pipes!

I ordered the straight pipe. I'll put them on this Fall and then dyno the car.

I figured, if I don't like the sound, I will just pull them off and try the mufflers.

I use these exhaust tips (3" inlet and dual angle cut 3.5" outlet)

and these to muffle the sound.

the look and sound is awesome!!!

3" duals all the way back with an h-pipe

I got them from Jegs...both Jegs and Summit sell them. They are made by dynatech engineering and they basically reduce the decible sound level. They are installed at the end of the header or at the exhaust tip. I have mine installed right before the exhaust tips pictured above.

They are made from t-304 stainless steel too.
