My 85 Auto is Upshifting to Quick

I have an 85 with automatic and as I take off from a dead stop it shifts out of 1st and into 3rd or 4th "not sure which" and suddenly boggs down because of no RPM's..? All this happens within about 20 feet.? I checked the fluid and it is full..Help,,what should I check next.

With any automatic transmission, if you have not messed with it recently, this includes the engine as well, the first thing the shop manual recommends is to change the fluid and filter and see what happens. If the problem persists, check the position/alignment of the throttle valve cable (TV cable). You will need a shop manual for this since the procedure is rather lengthy, but not difficult. The shop manual I have does say that the TV cable controls more than just the "downshift". Line pressure, shift points, shift feel, part throttle downshifts and detent downshifts are all triggered by the TV. I think your problem may lie here.

On my 85 it is a simple task to adjust the TV cable. It is the one in the middle. Where it is attached to the plate there is a tab, press it in and the black piece that sticks out with the cable running through it ought to slide back towards the firewall...if not while holding the tab in press it back....once it is steated all the way back....sit in the seat and with the engine off...push the pedal all the way to the floor. The cable is now adjusted.
Further I would as well have the fluid changed and a new filter added.
