When I disconnected my main fuel lines at the frame rail, both the feed and the return, so I could fabricate a new line with adequate clearance for my headers, I discovered a second fuel filter, a canister-type screw on filter, on the return line in addition to the inline (AC/Delco?) fuel filter on the feed line.

Neither my GM Service manual for 1987, nor the Haynes book for the 1984 thru 1991 has any mention of a second filter. Anybody else familiar with this set-up? I'll try to remember to shoot a picture of it tomorrow.

Whatever or whoever installed it did a professional job; it looks factory. :confused

Some 1985-86 Corvettes may exhibit a hammering/knocking type noise audible in the vehicle passenger compartment after a cold start, which normally diminishes after 3-4 minutes of engine operation.

This condition may be caused by pressure pulsations in the fuel system generated by fuel injector operation, resulting in hydraulic hammering in the chassis fuel pipes.

Vehicles exhibiting this condition may be repaired by installation of a filter-accumulator assembly in the fuel return system. Service kits containing required parts and installation instructions are noted below by body style and are available from GMSPO.

Aha! That may be it Rich.

It shouldn't be necessary in my current application, and I don't see the point in filtering the fuel after it goes past the injectors on its way back to the tank, so I think I'll just shelf it for now. Thanks.

You're welcome. I get that fuel knock on mine; the recall was never done. Doesn't bother me much since it goes away after a couple seconds anyway.
