This may be a pretty dumb question...but it doesn't hurt to ask.
I can hear my car "whistle" when driving or at idle, at first I didn't know where it was coming from until I pulled off the air cleaner. I assume the whistling is the air getting sucked in...is this normal?

I don't know if your running a Holley carb or not on your LT-1, but I had two Holleys in the past where the throttle body or throttle plate warped and sucked in air there. One actually was "cracked" letting air in at the crack.

It's somewhat common, if not "normal". If it really bothers you, you can invert the carb, completely back off the throttle stops, loosen the throttle valve screws on ONE plate at a time, and try to realign them correctly. It might still whistle, but you will have done all you can to prevent it.

You might want to check into the secondary throttle stop adjustment before you go that far, since it may be whistling there as well. You can usually determine that by manually moving the throttle shafts slightly with the engine idling.

I have a Holley 4175 650cfm that I just put on my 74. I had one of the vacuum hoses hooked up wrong and it whistled. Once I got all the connections where they're supposed to be, it quit. If you have a Holley, call their Tech service line from their website:

http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/TechServ/TechServ.html

They'll be able to fax you an instruction sheet for your carb & engine application with all hose routings.

I have a Holley 4150 sitting atop my engine...
I just contacted Holley to see what they say...

I think I got all my hoses hooked up correctly? But I'll double check.

As far as the throttle body/plate, is something thats easily replaceable?

The reply from Holley

Hello
If the secondary throttle plates are out of adjustment or it the throttle
shafts are worn it can whistle. Try moving the throttle shafts around.
Thanks Tom

If I get time this weekend, I'll mess around with it...

update

I switched the gasket from the new 1" thick to the 1/16" inch I had before. This seemed to fix the problem. I'm Wy would the thickness make such a difference?
