My wheel fell off!!!

I finally got my car back today, and the fender is perfect... even the inside of the fender is finished. I looked for about 15 minutes and couldn't find a single flaw in the fender! :) I decided on a painter over the weekend too, I am either going to shoot it over Turkey Day break, or winter break.... it all depends on when the guy can get me in. I'm smiling ear to ear!

I was fortunate and had no body damage. I pulled off the spindle to put new studs in. Then I noticed that the spindle's threads were worn out.

I found a local vette entuisiast, and he traded me a rear spindle for a '77 rear bumper (I had as extra).

I put it all back together, and used the car for awhile longer. The rear wheel bearings eventually starting 'talking' to me. At this point, I took the car off the road.

5 years later....I have replaced the rear wheel control arms, and most of the rest of the rear things. I was really making good progress on the car, until the Renaissance Festival creeped up on me. (I do medieval style fighting) I put the vette restoration on hold until January, to allow me to pursue my other hobbies and get ready for Christmas.

I love the Renaissance period. I've gone to two festivals out in California and loved them. Step-sis and her husband belong to a guild and attend every year for several weekends. Do you do jousting on horseback or hand-to-hand fighting on foot?

I do hand fighting on foot. Falling off a horse in heavy armour does not click with me. We have pics on our web-site,

BerlinaBob here-- I can relate your mishap, ---recently sold a substantially restored sweet '55/T'Bird-coupe to a chap who despite my pleading that he safely-trailer the untested car (---still on its original dry & cracked tires, that had not been on the road for 30+years), -completed dutifully counting-out a big-bundle of crisp Franklins, --at which point I repeated my plea... undaunted, the Mexican-guy grabbed the Pink-slip & keys, hopped-in and headed toward the freeway to LosAngeles (a trek of some 125-miles from central-coastal SanDiego), --with me running along side shouting for him to "stay in the right-lane and not exceed 45mph on the fresh-motor"! Well, he was progressing well toward LA in heavy afternoon-traffic (other drivers giving his classic-ride the- "thumbs-up", when he observed a tire/wheel rolling by, --soon enough discovering it to be one of his own (---sure enough, the "Left-front" which wheel-nuts I recall had not been fully tightened, -owing to his haste to beat heavy-traffic) that he wide-eyedly watched drift ahead threading between a couple of other cars without incident, --and then in persuit of it as it came to a standing hault upon the roadside, still with hubcap intact!! Amazingly, other than a slightly bent lower-aft wheel-arch, the only damage (besides to his pride) was to the Left/backing-plate, and he found the lugnuts still contained behind the hubcap, remounted the wheel and proceeded homeward.... I can only imagine there are still impressions in the steering-wheel rim where he doubtlessly was "white-knuckling it" the balance of the trip, --wondering what might be happening next!!! The only thing I ever saw to actually beat that on on the LA-freeway, was a family of Afro-americans driving casually along in a '60/Corvair as though everything was simply "hunkey-dorie", except for one thing, well four-things really--- the car had no tires, just driving on the steel-rims, which I could see throwing huge-sparks and wearing-down at that!!! So I pulled around'em and went ahead to call the CHIP's before sombody got hurt; --but hey, what do you do if you've got to go someplace, and you're to broke to afford tires... :crazy :s :eek :_rock :BOW :nono
