mystery box

That's right boys an girls, it is my new LS2 engine and 4L65E trans! After waiting for what seemed like forever for GM to release the salvage and then waiting for the pack mules to cart it to Austin, It is finally setteled in in the garage. I dummied it up in the chassis last night, and it will need to have a Corvette oil pan installed. The GTO oil pan will not clear the chassis. The guys that pulled it went overboard to get everything that they even thought that I might be able to use. They even pulled the body harness, fuse block and throttle pedal. It is going to be so nice having a 0 mile engine and trans that I do not have to worry about how it has been treated by a previous owner, and no pre-installation tear-down to check condition.

This puppy is going to look great under the hood of the 65, and with 400 hp, it should move pretty good too!:D

A couple of train cars of new GTO's derailed up in the midwest and this came from one of them. Gm would not allow such a car to ever be rebuilt, so they were parted out. I chased one of these engines for over 3 months waiting for GM to finally release the cars for salvage. It actually had 3 miles on it!

Thank's John, for your prompt responce. Would I be correct in assuming that they have all been gobbled up. ?

What kind of money was needed to get one's hands on one. ?

I think that most, like the one I got, were already spoken for at least a month before GM released them. I had gotten real tired of waiting for the cars to be released, and had almost bought a brand-new LS2 in a crate. If another week had passed, I probably would have already placed the order. These drivetrains could be bought for about $7500 from the first generation Salvage yards, but I would expect them to be popping up at the performance engine resellers for $8000 to $8500 in the next few weeks, depending on transmission. Even at $8K, it is not a bad deal when you start adding up all the little bits and pieces. You can buy a LS2 in the crate for $5300, a trans for another $2000, but tby the time you buy all the accessories, computer, harness, ect, ect. You can easily end up with $10K in the drive train. Unfortunately, almost none of the accessories from an old LS1 are usable, and the harness and computer are different as well. What really suprised me was how much smaller the computer has gotten, it is a fraction of the size of the old LS1 ECM!
I had originally planned on using the new LS7 engine in the 65 project, but it does not look very likely that I would be able to buy one for at least the next year. GM released the dealers to take orders for them, and then cancelled all the orders. It now looks like very few will be made available in crate engine form this year, and there are many people standing in line. After a little research, I also found out that it was going to be a very expensive engine to build. The base engine is $13K, and does not include the oill tank and lines, computer, harness, or any accessories. The PCM is special to just the LS7 and will be at least $800, the starter is also a LS7 only item and will cost over $400, the alternator, PS pump, and all the accessory brackets are also LS7 only items. By the time you bought all these items and got the oil tank and lines for the dry sump, you could easily end up with $25 K in this drivetrain!
Even the oil filter is special and has unique threads so no other filter can be used. I can see this engine being discontinued in a year or two, and parts becomming a real problem to find, just like the ZR1 engine!

More then I bargained for

John, Thank's for the wealth of information, it is much more then I had bargained for.

As for the LS7, it's purchase had also crossed my mind for a up-coming project, but with all the LS7 only parts that you mention, it would not have been feasible, or for that matter, affordable. :nono

I think I will just have to be content with the 572 I have on order.

Thank's again
Bob

Bob,
It is pretty hard to beat the 572 for raw torque. Fuel econmy sucks of course, but who builds these things for economy anyway!

John
with the SR111 frame, LS2 motor, and the John Mcgraw touch, that is going to be one very special, very tricked out '65! :beer

Can't wait to see the continueing progress pics

Just to set it straight Federal Laws do not allow MFR's to sell vehicles as new and the railroad has insurance on the vehicles while they are transported. Every wrecked new vehicle is subject to scrappage. Lots of good parts going to waste. John is one of the lucky ones.

You got me there

Bob, I would agree with you, if only I knew who " Shania " was. :naughty:

Ouppsss

Boy, do I wish I had never participated in this thread. :duh

I mistakenly though she might be someone's wife or girlfriend, so I didn't want to make any remarks that would be interpreted as being dis-respectiful. I can now understand why 67heaven though I was pulling his dick.

Believe me, NEVER again.
