I have this bracket left over after putting the engine and trans back into the car and have no idea where it goes. Anyone identify this thing and let me know what it is for.....

Well, now if someone would tell me how to post a picture, then I can put this bracket picture up and get help....but so far have not been able to post a picture...AAARRRGGHHH.....

Thanks,

Hi Lanny -

That look like one of the support brackets for the distributor beauty cover -

I'll go check my pictures of the build of the 71 and try to find this installed -

best regards -

edit - I could not find a clear picture of the braket that supports the chrome coer over the distributor on the 71 ray I helped refurb., but that is what that bracket looks like to me. It might be different on an 81 also - just an idea - / edit

Lanny,

That looks to me like the bracket that goes between the block and the back end of the starter motor. The large hole is for the bolt to the block where the ground lug is attached, and the small hole goes over one of the studs on the front(towards the front of the car) of the starter. It's a heat shield for the battery ground cable.
I took a long time to figure out where it went on my 82, since it isn't shown on the assembly manual.
I have to change my oil today, so I will take a picture of it while I'm down there so you can see where it goes.:)

Yep, the small hole goes on the top stud on the starter motor, and it covers the ground wire to the block.

You know, that was my original thought as well. But the bend in the bracket is such that the holes do not line-up correctly and besides I already have a support bracket and terminal heat shield in place...see new picture.

I do not remember any kind of support for the distributor beatuy cover....have to check this out.

Anyone else??????????

I'm not sure exactly where it goes but it is a support for the wiring harness. There is a plastic holder that presses into the small hole that is taped to the wiring.
