Name that noise! (Video)

The warranty on my car expires in about 1.5 months. I want to get everything buttoned up by that time. the biggest annoying thing that the car does is that it has an obnoxious rear end noise when cutting the weel to the left when backing up or turning right when going forward. Sounds like an axle bouncing all over the place and you can feel it in the drivetrain with your hand on the shifter. The service rep at the dealer told me it was just the fact that when the car sits overnight all of the gear oil runs off the posi plates and i am just hearing noise from the clutches popping until they get coated. I couldn't really explain to him what the noise sounded like. I have been under the car with a wrench and found nothing loose. It is always from the right rear of the car and only when it is cold. After 10 miles or so you don't really hear it. No sounds at all when going straight. Since it does it EVERY morning, I took my digi cam and recorded me backing out of the garage like I do every day I drive it. The noise is quite well heard. The link below is to that video clip. Listen at exactly 11 secs into it and you can hear it no problem. The car is going into the shop Thursday (leaving it overnight Weds) so they can hear it first hand. Personally, I think the rear end is worn out or something like that just cause of the noise and the feel. What do you think?

it sounds like something loose, or a exhaust shield contacting the body when twisting?

if it is the clutches in the rear, they should not loose the fluid like that, the additive is made to stay on the clutchess, if the car sat for a couple of months then i ccould see that,

Have you done any after market upgrades to the car? I had a noise that I would swear was coming from the rear end when ever I turned left. What it turned out to be was a bolt from an after market exhaust was too long and was making contact with the x frame as the car flexed only when making left turns. A power hacksaw made the bolt shorter and no more noise or vibration. Even if the car is stock it could be something loose.

you can actually feel this through the shifter if your hand is on it. the car is completely stock. It is a little more obnoxious in person. What you here on the vid is the worst I have heard it yet but I have only owned the car for 5 days so it may get worse.

Have you recently or ever had the rear end gear oil changed? I had a similar problem twice, years apart on different posi rear ends. Both times after a dealer changed the gear oil and did not put the additive in. It caused the clutches to chatter rather than engage smoothly. You might try changing the oil and MAKE SURE they put the CORRECT additive in. Good Luck.

Well, I heard it and it definetly is not a sound I would like in my car, it might not even be the rear end it happens when you turn the steering wheel so I would also look at the steering for a possible source. Make sure you have all the receipts showing that you tried to get the dealer to correct it under warrenty, that way when your warrenty is up this will be classified as an "on going issue" and the dealer will still be responsible to correct it. Good luck let us know what you find out.

I have to admit I'm stumped and I'm pretty good with noises. I worked on one simlilar to this before where you could feel it in the shifter. Turned out to be the oddest thing. It was the internal components of his shock absorber and was near imposible to figure out.

Richard.

i am stumped but it sure as hell sounds pricey whatever it is. good luck

Well, I got it back. So far so good. They claim they simply needed to "service" it or in other word, they put new fluid in it. I swear they must have picked the youngest guy in the shop to work on it. Now it has a new noise. Going over bumps on in the drivers rear it has a new rattle. I am assuming that they had to take off the drivers side exhaust to do the seal axle and cover. The drivers side exhaust sits lower than the other side (didn't before) and I can move it up or down and reproduce the noise. I swear, if you want to get anything done right you have do it your self. I think he forgot to tighten up a hanger.

Glad to hear you got the expensive concern fixed. You might drive it in a few circles left and right and make sure the clutches are really working properly. Bummer about the new noise but it sounds like a simple oversight.

There are a couple of heat shields over the top of the mufflers that I have seen come loose. They are just pop riveted on and can lose the rivets.

So far all is still well. The next day though my air direction selecter wasn't working (the thing that makes the air go from floor, to defrost, to vent etc) and I had a check engine light on. I dropped it off at the dealership and they called me the next morning with it fixed by 8:30. I am pretty sure the mechanic forgot to hook up a vacuum line when they did the intake manifold. For the rear end, it also said on the service order that they put never sieze of some kind on the axle splines. I think clutch disks were hanging on the splines. Either way, the noise is in fact gone. I will be dropping the cash into an extended warranty though. Not real confident the fix is permanent.
