I'm running a 80 shark with the L48 350, an edelbrock 600 cfm carb and a truckload of troubles. The motor was rebuilt about 6000 miles ago, and the carb installed about 5000. I loaned it out to a trusted friend, who changed the oil, but was running with much too high oil pressure (about 80 psi) for a few hundred miles at the least. He drove it to my place with no problems, and I let it sit for about 3 days before I tried to start it. When i tried to start it, I pretty much had to flood it to get it to run, and I can only run it at about 2000 rpm and higher, if I let it go below that, it dies. There is oil in some of the cylinders, and a few of the plugs have oil on them. (I just changed them after seeing that). It is 'possible" that a small piece of the carb broke off and fell in, long story. If that is possibly related, I dont know. Also, when the engine starts to go below 2000 rpm to die, the carb starts to leak from the plunger on the front drivers side of the carb. Needing desparate help, dont want to pay a shop a ton of money if this is something 2 above ameteur mechanics can do.
Appreciated! Jens

Sounds like you have a carb problem. Not real familiar with the E-carbs but would guess that the Accelartor pump is shot and you have some blockage in the idle circuit (possibly from the diaphram/plunger on the accelarator pump piston). Just a guess.

Randy

PS: The oily plugs are probably from the wash down of the cylinder from the too much gas condition. Fix the carb and changed the oil and this should go away.

Hmm, not a bad Idea

Sounds like a good idea to me, the help is appreciated. Anyone else have comments?

If gas is running out your plunger on the accelerator pump, then the floats are not closing the float valves and the gas level in the float bowls is uncontrolled. The level needs to be at a specific level for the fuel/air mixture to be right in the Carb. This is probably resulting in a general rich mixture under all conditions. You probably have something stuck in the needle valve causing it to not close when the float bowl fills. Or your float is cracked and filled with gasoline and is non-bouyant.

Either way, you need to crack that carb apart and check out the float valve.
