I found someone selling a 64 327, need some numbers decoded please. casting#378280 pad# FIII3rd vin# 4107893 What do these numbers tell you about this motor. Thanks Mark.

Hi Mark,

I assume you missed a digit and you meant to type 3782870 which is correct for a '64 or '65 327.

F= Flint

1113= November 13th

RD suffix is a 300 horse manual trans in a 1964 Corvette.

4107893= the 7893rd 1964 Corvette built, somtime late in December 1963. I don't have a birthday book.

Did you happen to get the casting date too? It's on the opposite side of the rear flange from the casting number.

RD was a 1964 only code so I assume that its a Nov 13th 1964 assembly and not a 11/13 1965 which would carry a H* suffix of some sort.

Tom --

Thanks for the decode help. Just trying to determine how close this engine's production was to my car's (birthday 11/27/63). What does the November 13th date represent (noted in my information as "pad #"). What is a pad number? If you're asking for the casting date, I am assuming it's not the date the block was cast. Does the Pad # represent the date the engine was assembled? BTW, you are correct, I did mistype the number.

Thanks again for your help.

The pad number is stamped into the pad at the front of the right head when the engine is assembled. F1113RD is the pad number.

The casting date is the actual date that the block was cast and is in raised numbers just like the casting number. It should be before the assembly date, obviously, but not by much.

This engine was assembled 2 weeks before your car was built and I don't think there is anyone that would argue with you about dates with this engine in your car. It is close to perfect.

Thanks again Tom. I think I will contact the person who has the engine. I am just trying to get car back with period correct parts, and would be up front if I ever sold the car. (as far as numbers matching) Mark
