Hi, I saw an ad on eBay for a '69 Convertible. It looks like a clone of my first Vette. The dealer sent me the VIN number, but over the phone he said "CarFax" wouldn't be able to help me.

Can I find out any history of this car with the VIN? Specifically, I need to know if it was in Las Vegas in 1976 - 1977 (I bought it in 1977) and later sold it in Southern California - where the car is now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

THe VIN # for the car is 194679S738750

Regards,
George

Unfortunately, he's right about CarFax:

VIN Accuracy Tips:

Copy & paste the VIN if it comes from a web site.

Type the characters in groups of four (no spaces)

The letters "I", "O" and "Q" never appear in a VIN.

The VIN must be exactly 17 characters in length.

The vehicle year must be 1981 through the present

Click on the Learning Center at the top of this page and go to the Owner Research Center. In there you will find a lot of info on tracking a vehicle's history including the California BMV site. I don't know what they require to trace a title history but if the car has been in CA since you sold it there is a good chance it can be traced back to you...if it is the same car.

Thanks for the response, I'll check with the DMV. Hope they keep records that far back...

I just got info from the North Carolina DMV about my 75 Vette. The original title was issued 2/12/75. I can't say for sure but I bet California and Nevade do have records that far back. It took a few weeks to get the info back from North Carolina.

You might check online - the Ohio BMV had online access to basic info back to 1991. The rest required submitting a form and waiting.

Maybe I could have gotten it faster by making phone calls - who knows?

This is a longshot - do you know where you bought it? Maybe they can track the records for you and tell you the VIN of your Vette.

Another longshot - check with the license bureau of Nevada - maybe they keep microfilm of license registrations. If they could find a registration of your Corvette in 1976-77 they could get you the VIN.

Yet another - Did you get a speeding ticket or any moving violation in Las Vegas with the Vette? Maybe there are court records of that and the VIN would be there.

Good luck
