Hey
im more of a ford fan and have a pretty quick mustang but i also have a 80 vette. My dad bought this almost when new and its been with him all this time. We encountered some problems we might sell it. It is in tip top shape and the inside, weatherstripping, paint is new. It has 120,xxx. Now if we decide not to we go back to the game of trying to build a ~380-400 hp 327. does anyone know the most common engine combo to come up with those numbers?
thanks

Crate motors seem to be the most popular way of doing it. In reality, going over 300 hp on a carb'ed small block is difficult to do. A true 400 hp small block is rare, although many a person will tell you they have one under the hood.

Dynos are all not accurate, but at least can give a base line of where you are, and where you want to go.

GM has some excellent crates as does Edelbrock. Edelbrock has a perfomer RPM package that should be good for 425 (heads cam, intake, suggested compression ratio, and required exhaust diameter, etc).

I hope you decide to keep it and enjoy it.

You might want to chat with some of the guys over at the 2nd Gen Camaro site for some additional advice. There seems to be a lot of guys who have highly modifed small blocks on the site.

I agree with 69MYWAY...I believe what you might be in for is a ZZ4 crate motor with some speciality pieces like dart heads and some roller rockers etc.

I will say though that I took a test drive in this guys 67 327 sb Camaro in Idaho Falls..which he believes was pumping out a little over 350 hp...and that was a definite kick in the pants with a 4 spd. Your 80..I believe pumps out 220 stock...if you had the right 327...either from a Vette or Camaro...you could easily get around 350 hp with the right parts.

I am probably alone on this, but I am from the school that if you were to get an early small block 400...you can have it punched out to a 406...and very affordably have a 350 plus hprsepower engine. A firend of mine runs this combination in his 70 Camaro SS and he routinely beats a lot of small block 350's with a lot of money in them. Something to think about if your going to build an engine anyways...
