There's a new oil one TV now that uses a littlke rewd Corvette saying use change it every 15,000 miles. Is this oil replacing the Mobile 1 that's on my oil filler cap on my '04 or just another hustle? Will the dealer put the old Mobile 1 or this new stuff in my car. In other words is this stuff what I can use?

I don't think its the synthetic that is advertised. There was a thread about this a little while ago. You'll note it really isn't a red C6, just close

Go to www.mobiloil.com for info on all the Mobile oils. The 15,000 mile Mobil 1 extended is a full synthetic oil and a good replacement for the standard Mobil 1 oil. The Mobile Clean 7500 is a synthetic blend(?). The Mobile Clean 5000 is a conventional oil and not suitable for new Corvettes. I expect that the standard Mobile 1 will slowly be phased out as stocks are depleted leaving only the 15,000 mile oil available. Bottom line, use the present Mobile 1 or the 15,000 mile extended in your Corvette. Either will suffice.

Make sure the extended life passes GM 4718M. I don't think it does. Mobil one posts it on the bottle.

This stuff I copied from the Mobil oils page.

The one thing I don't quite get/understand is that if synthetics are so much better than conventionals, why is it that for the "High Milage" product uses conventional over synthetic? I guess it has something to do with all of the additives they put in?

What I have heard and read is this. If you introduce synthetic oil to a higher mileage motor that has been running conventional oil, you may be prone to oil leaks. The synthetic is more likely to leak through older gaskets and seals. Smaller molecules?

Hi wwr -

I think it is a marketing hustle.

I will use Mobil 1 (the regular old stuff) as long as I can find it.

In addition, I would not ever consider leaving any oil in my car for 15000 miles.

Just my two cents.

best regards -

Isn't there a disclaimer on the bottle stating that you should change your oil at the recommended interval anyway? Off the top of my head, I can't think of any car out there that recommends 15,000 miles between oil changes.

I'm confident that high quality oils can last for 6,000 miles with no problem. However, it's the oil filter that won't be able to filter adequately for that much mileage. Some people just change the oil filter and top of the oil off. But what is the point to that? Saving money? How much money do you really save? Maybe $40 a year?

You are right. I changed my oil today with 26% oil life remaining on the odometer. It was brown enough for my liking. Any longer and I think it would have looked really dark. 10,000 miles is long enough for an oil change.

Guess I'm starting to subscribe to the thinking that gm spent lots of time , research, etc. into the dic monitoring system..Therefore change it when the dic computer says so???????

When having the dealer work on your car, the last thing you have to worry about is if they put in the correct oil.

The Mobil 1 Extended Performance sounds like the standard Mobil 1 but with "with 36 percent more anti-wear additives and 37 percent more cleaning agents ".

The web site says that the regular Mobil 1 is " recommended for applications under warranty".

So for your '04, it would be the regular Mobil 1.

I'm with you, MRM1149; I use the DIC system exclusively. I have 125,000+ miles on my '98 and it is smooth & going strong!

I've never waited until the DIC said to change the oil. In fact, I change it somewhere between 3K & 5K depending on how I've driven it lately. A lot of around town or just highway miles. I do like to see the old oil coming out like a nice honey color. When does the message appear on the DIC and what does it say exactly? :beer
